Reviews for The Tourette Syndrome and OCD Checklist
2 ratings1 review
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The title of this very dense, and well written, book might better use the plural "checklists" rather than the singular "checklist." Sections three through five explicitly group multiple checklists for use by parents (Sec. 3), teachers (Sec. 4) and "Other Helpful Checklists for Parents and Teachers" (Sec. 5). A lot of these are lists of things to observe or do (e.g., "What Parents Can Do at Home and at School . . ."), but there are a number of actual lists with check boxes consisting of different observational options. For example, section Three's "Home Behavior Assessment" asks:1. The specific behavior observed is:__ Refusal to comply__ Aggressive behavior towards others__ Disrespect__ Meltdown or ragesThe book does not generally define the terms used in these lists, so individuals will have to decide what actually comprises "disrespect." If this were a work directed towards professional clinicians or diagnosticians, that would be a fatal flaw. But, since the intended audience is not the professional or research community, it's probably not a big deal. I would still recommend that this is a book that should accompany other, more comprehensive, books about OCD and Tourette's. Section Five, "Other Helpful Checklists," does list a short bibliography of other recommended works on the subject. I'm hesitant to consider this a stand-alone purchase on the subject.I don't hesitate to recommend it very strongly to its intended audience. It very responsibly, and very nicely starts out with an overview, with definitions(!) of these two disorders, as well as related disorders such as ADHD and dysgraphia. Note that there are no citations in the body of the text, so this book would be less useful for someone formally researching this subject.I can easily give this 5 stars since it is spot on for its intended audience of parents and teachers. My caveats have more to do with the wrong audience purchasing and using this book.NOTE: The reviewer received a free copy of this book via the Amazon Vine Program. This review is also posted there.

This is a fantastic book full of wit and wisdom from an educational pro. I have known Susan Conners for over twenty years and have had the good fortune to watch her speak and engage an audience. If you don't get a chance to see Conners in action, this book is the next best thing. Her depth of knowledge and capacity to make a difference in the lives of children shines through on every page.

I would like to dedicate this book to my two Marys: my best friend for twenty-five years, Mary Lohrman, and my younger sister, Mary Conners. I lost both of these two beloved people in the past three years and both at much too young an age. My friend, Mary, was one of the most extraordinary women I have ever met-a teacher, a mom, and a humanitarian. We spoke every day, sometimes for hours. Her passing left a huge hole in my life that can never be filled. Everyone should be as blessed as I was to have such a wonderful friend.
My sister, Mary, was my hero. Most people in this world faced with the many obstacles that she had to overcome in life-TS, OCD, depression, and a significant hearing loss-would have sat back and let the world support them. Instead she chose to go back to school, earn her bachelor's and master's degrees in her late forties, and go to work as a mental health counselor helping others. It was the unconditional love and friendship of these two ladies that was the wind beneath my wings
as I wrote this book.
I would also like to thank my beloved Andy who has shared my life for sixteen years through good times and bad. He will hopefully be at my side for many more years to inspire me to continue the work that I do.
About This Book
Tourette Syndrome (TS), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and the other associated neurological disorders discussed in this book are some of the most baffling and complex disorders currently known. They are also some of the most misunderstood disorders you will encounter. Children with these disorders can be challenging to both teach and parent because of the complexities and the ever-changing nature and severity of their symptoms. Unless you have walked in the shoes of these children, it is very difficult to truly understand how disruptive these disorders can be to the individual who has them. It is equally difficult to know how to accommodate these symptoms without enabling the child. It is my hope that this book will:
Teach you what Tourette Syndrome and OCD are and, just as important, what they are not
Help you understand the impact of these disorders on all aspects of a child's life
Dispel the stereotypic myths about TS and OCD
Give you practical techniques, strategies, and accommodations for both educating and parenting children with these disorders
Assist you in obtaining school services and creating an appropriate education plan and placement for the child
Help you see the child and her strengths, not just the symptoms of her disorder
About the Author
Susan Conners, MEd, is a nationally and internationally sought-after speaker, teacher trainer, and author on the topic of the education of children with Tourette Syndrome (TS), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and other related neurological disorders. She has presented hundreds of conferences and workshops in forty-eight of the fifty states, in Canada, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Norway. She was a multiaward-winning middle school teacher for thirty-three years and has TS, OCD, and learning disabilities herself. Conners has authored many articles and brochures and produced videos on this topic. She has appeared on and served as a consultant for several national television programs on TS, including ABC's 20/20, The Geraldo Show, The Montel Williams Show, ABC's The Practice, the BBC Discovery Channel, the Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary on Tourette Syndrome (I Have Tourette's, but Tourette's Doesn't Have Me), and ABC Primetime's Emmy Award-winning documentary (Living with Tourette's).
