1 Supreme Atma Union
The sages
Tell us yoga which an antidote be,
To the contact with all the miseries,
Within its grasp we in unison do be,
With unchanging Supreme Atma fully.

Suta
On hearing their words said plainly,
Krishna-Dvaipayana pleased highly,
The most excellent among the yogis,
Who understand yoga, stated clearly:

Vyasa
Brahmins! Listen, I shall recount truly,
Yoga that destroys existence worldly,
By practicing it, liberated is the yogi,
Else is difficult to attain undoubtedly.

Devotee propitiate preceptor earnestly
Hear the yogic scriptural texts truly,
He must then master very efficiently,
Ancient Puran and Vedas completely.

The Wise understand diet of a yogi,
The pitfalls in yoga practice plainly,
Its time, place, of opposites be free,
Avoid hoarding possessions worldly.
5
Flour of fried grains, rice gruel fully,
Butter-milk, roots, fruits, milk, barley,
Corn and oil cakes but conducive be,
To the steady practice of yoga truly.
6
Practice not yoga if mind is unhappy,
Or if excited, weary, windy, or hungry,
Or conflicting opposites existing be,
As when very hot, cold present be.
7
Practice no yoga in a place noisy,
Close to water and near fire if be,
Nor in a run-down cow-pen surely,
A cross-road, or where reptiles be.

In cremation ground, or monastery,
On river bank, anthill, near well truly,
If the place is unsafe indisputably,
Or on heaps of dried leaves surely.
9
If anyone practices yoga foolishly,
Without considering restrictions truly,
Defects, creating obstacles surely,
I shall describe them all very clearly.

Deafness, lethargy, loss of memory,
Dumbness, blindness, fever clearly,
They are but produced immediately,
And ignorance is caused similarly.

So, arrangement be made for safety,
By person conversant with yoga truly,
Since the physical body a means be,
To gain virtue, wealth, love and liberty.

A hermitage, quiet and with privacy,
From fear, needless movements fully,
Empty house or secluded temple truly
Suitable places for yogic practice be.
13
The initial or the last hours three,
Of night, forenoon or midday only,
Is the appropriate time assuredly,
For the practice of yoga certainly.
14
A devotee shall keep unfailingly,
His mind pure, concentrated fully,
His diet shall be proper certainly.
Control his sense-organs totally.

Facing east on a lovely seat be,
That is comfortable and steady,
It shall neither too raised-up be,
Nor too far depressed actually.
16
Devotee pure, truthful, desire free be,
Observe sleep periods moderately,
Subdued and controlled anger plainly,
Engage in the welfare of living wholly.

Bear inconvenience of suffering truly,
Of opposite pairs as heat, cold clearly,
Be self-possessed, keeping his body,
Legs and head in a posture steady.

Place both hands on navel calmly,
Seated in lotus posture comfortably,
Eyes fixed on the tip of nose only,
Controlling vital airs, speech fully.

All sense organs with the mind be,
Withdrawn in heart, Atma, spirit fully,
Silent and saying ‘Om’ continuously,
With mouth covered, is ever steady.
20
Subduing all the tamas activities,
By the means of rajas qualities,
Those of rajas by sattva clearly,
Maintain pure, quiet posture fully.

With eyes closed, the yogi ever be,
In unison with Purushottam surely,
Salvation giver, in lotus-like heart be,
Who omnipresent, unsullied totally.
22
At outset, fix sense organs totally,
Action organs, elements in Atma truly.
Unite Atma with Supreme Atma fully,
Then doing yoga, the true devotee.

Supreme region characterized be,
By hundredth part of hair tip truly,
Yogi devoted to meditation sees,
By lamp lite by his mind plainly.

The practitioner of yoga capable be,
Of withdrawing the sense organs fully,
Like a turtle that withdraws wholly,
Its limbs under its back completely.
25
If the mind of a person capable be,
To find ultimate in Supreme Atma truly,
Abandoning all sensuous objects fully,
Then his success in yoga assured be.

When the mind from sensuous is free,
In communion with The Brahman be,
Mind dissolved in Supreme Atma fully,
He attains to highest state of bliss truly.

When the mind of yogi disengaged be
From every kind of the worldly activity,
After attaining highest state of ecstasy,
The yogi accomplishes salvation finally.

By the power of yoga, attains the yogi,
The Pure Purushottam who termed be,
Fourth conscious state transcends truly,
Awake, dream, deep-sleep – liberated be.

A yogi who free of the desires, lust be,
Who in any posture is pleasing to see,
Who sees all the pleasant things only,
Aware of transience of all, liberated be.
30
He who conversant with the yoga be,
Not indulge in objects of senses truly,
Unattached, practicing yoga regularly,
The yogi attains liberation undoubtedly.

The yoga is never achieved merely,
By lotus posture, concentration only,
The unison of mind, sense-organs be,
When with Atma - that is yoga actually.

The great sages! I so recounting be,
Yoga that bestows liberation truly,
Cause of bondage release worldly,
What else you wish to hear tell me?

Hearing his words they said loudly,
`Well said, well said!’ ever repeatedly,
After praising, honouring Vyasa truly,
Began asking him once again plainly.

The sages
O Sage! The excellent Brahmin truly!
We are but not satiated completely,
Imbibing verbal nectar which does be,
Flowing from your ocean mouth freely.
35
Hence, O Sage! Describe entirely,
Yoga that bestows salvation finally,
Most-excellent among humans truly!
We wish to hear of Samkhya fully.

Sage! How intelligent Brahmin clearly,
Versed in Veda, sacrifices, true devotee,
Jealousy free, on truth, virtue mind be
Attains to the Brahman undeniably?
37
Does he attain by doing austerities,
By living celibate life, renouncing fully,
By intellect, or of the thought clearly,
Offered by Samkhya or Yoga? Tell truly.

By what means does a man actually,
Attain concentration of the mind fully,
And control over his senses finally?
It befits you to explain to us amply.

Vyasa
None achieving spiritual attainment be,
Without knowledge, wisdom, austerity,
Without subduing sense organs truly,
Or without renouncing everything fully.

All the major elements certainly be,
Of Self-born Lord’s creation initially,
Be attached into the physical bodies,
Of all the living beings consistently.

Body from earth, viscosity water truly,
The eyes from the fire element do be,
Air support of prana organic gases be,
Space inner cavity of embodied body.
42
Deities presiding over parts of the body,
Vishnu exiting, Indra strength of body,
Fire-god in bowels, over ears Sarasvati,
And Speech goddess over tongue surely.

Ears, skin, eyes, tongue, nose cumulatively,
With five action organs, all sense-organs be,
Helps eat, hear, feel, see, taste, smell truly,
Sense-objects apart from sense-organs be.
44
Mind in unison with the sense-organs be,
As snake with animals beyond control be.
Individual Atma stationed in the heart be,
Always in unison with the mind wholly.
45
Sense-organs, objects, basic nature be,
Consciousness, mind, vital airs namely,
The individual Atma is present eternally,
In physical body of all beings assuredly.

There no support unto the sattva do be,
What by guna not conscious ones surely,
Splendor does create sattva unfailingly,
And by no means the gunas ever but be.
47
So, physical body consists of 17 entities,
It is enveloped by sixteen guna qualities,
Brahmins! Wise sage by his mind sees,
The Atma within the Atma but very clearly.

It cannot be perceived by the eye clearly,
Or by the sense-organs unquestionably,
It by means of the illuminated mind be,
That higher Atma is revealed completely.

Atma devoid of sound, touch, colour be,
It is free of all taste and smell wholly,
It without form or sense-organs does be.
And one shall feel it in one’s own body.
50
One can feel that which un-manifest be,
In all the physical bodies consistently,
That is honoured by mortals excessively
Can be the Brahman after demise finally.
