    Just as I get out of the barn, I bump into a man.

     

    In my head, I say all of the English curse words I know and a few Mandarin ones as well.

     

    Not only did I bump into a man, but I bumped into a big man. Since I'm only a half-inch over five feet, most people are taller than me, but this man is a freaking giant. And not only is he taller than me, but he's also significantly wider with pure muscle. He looks like someone who can tame any horse or bull.

     

    He's also very good-looking, but I shouldn't be thinking about that right now.

     

    "Um, hi, how do you do, sir?" I ask because I'm an idiot. I check his jeans. Doesn't look like he's armed, so he (probably) won't shoot me for trespassing on his property.

     

    "Fine, except for finding a strange woman on my property," he says dryly.

      A BARN IS NOT MY IDEAL place to sleep.

      But it sure beats sleeping under the same roof with my dickhead stepdad.

      I wince as I lie down on the pile of hay, pressing a hand to my stomach. My stepdad has always been a jerk to me. When my mom wasn’t around, he would call me a useless, ungrateful little girl and claim that I would never amount to a goddamn thing.

      Though I wanted to knock his teeth out, I just gritted my own when he said such things to me, and I never told Mama about it.

      Please don’t get the wrong idea about my mom. She loved the hell out of me and absolutely would’ve dumped my stepdad’s ass if she knew that he treated me poorly. When I was 13, a sleazy boyfriend of hers would get a little handsy with me whenever he babysat me. For a while, I tolerated his touching, even though it made me uncomfortable, because one, my mom liked him and two, it wasn’t like he was hurting me, per se. His hands would just linger on my thigh or the small of my back.

      However, one night, I woke up hollering because I had a dream about his touching going further. At first, I tried to tell Mama I couldn’t remember the details of my nightmare, but the woman put me through the inquisition and made me tell her the truth.

      After I told her about my dream, she packed our meager belongings. Once she put them and me in our car, she drove to the boyfriend’s house and slit the tires on his truck before writing pervert on the side of it with her key.

      Just as the door to the house swung
