Introduction
Many years ago, I was invited to a cocktail party to meet new people and make some friends. Sounds fun, right?! More like, terrifying. Back then, I would describe myself as a very shy and introverted person. I honestly would have enjoyed staying home and reading a good book. The complete series of Sherlock Holmes wasn't going to read itself, after all.
I also believed I couldn’t communicate well with others on their level because of how nervous and anxious I was around new people and crowds. I remember the many thoughts running through my head:
● What in the world are we going to talk about?
● What if it gets awkward?
● What if I put my foot in my mouth, again?
Having lived with these nagging thoughts for most of my life, I made peace with the fact that I simply didn’t have the needed conversation skills. It’s hopeless. There’s nothing I can do about it. That’s some attitude I had!
Maybe you're wondering how a person like that would get invited in the first place.
Well, someone invited my older brother, and he wanted to help me break out of my shell. We were noticeably different when it came to talking to new people. He was blessed with extroversion, which, to me, felt like a superpower that I thought I would never attain myself.
People socially sought after him, and for good reason. He knew how to break the ice, connect easily with others, and could even entertain a whole crowd! So, naturally, I felt more confident around him. And if he was going, the cocktail party couldn’t be all that bad, right?
The next thing I knew, we both got dressed up, and hit the road. For my brother, we were heading toward a good time. But for me, a disaster.
About two hours after we arrived, there I was: In the middle of the room, by myself, looking very awkward with a cocktail in hand and no one to talk to. My brother on the other hand, was busy making friends and living his best life.
What was his secret? I mean, really?
What was the difference between us two? More importantly, was that a skill I could master myself?
Was being an effective (and enjoyable) communicator possible for someone like me who was shy and reserved? Was I doomed forever?
Are you shy? Does the thought of talking to others make you anxious?
After that evening, I made it my mission to find ways to become a better conversationalist. It was a long and arduous road to improvement, and worth every bit of effort.
How often have you found yourself in a similar position where you feel it best to avoid these types of social scenarios?
The truth is most of us have a wealth of knowledge and a whole truckload of passion for interesting topics. Perhaps you just struggle to package it in a way that draws others in.
Have your friends or family pointed this out to you? Maybe, like me, they called you the shy one. Or they said on your behalf, They are just quiet.
It’s not that you don’t have something to say, but it’s hard when you struggle to get your thoughts across. You have so much information stored up, but the neural connections in your brain don’t want to help you relate it to others. And this might cause some anxiety, which stops you dead in your tracks. Like I said, I’ve been there.
Imagine yourself being a big part of the conversation. There you are, standing tall and looking confident in a small group of people you respect. You’re telling your knockout story and building up to the best part. Everyone’s eagerly anticipating what you will say next. As they hang on to every word, you dramatically pause before saying the most important part. As the story goes on, it’s eating them up inside! The suspense is causing them to sweat. One lady passes out from all the excitement. A man in the group catches her just before she hits the ground. When she finally comes to, all she asks is, How did the story end?
With a smile, you kindly explain, Well, I wouldn’t want to bore you all by telling it again.
No, please!
they say. We would love to hear it again! Sarah, don’t faint this time.
Poor Sarah.
End scene.
Was that a little over the top? Perhaps. A little dramatic? Maybe. But learning to speak to others is not just about exchanging words. We want to be engaging while we do it, to connect.
Imagine feeling excited instead of anxious whenever someone mentions a social or corporate gathering.
Imagine being the person in the room that everyone wants to talk to!
Wow. Feels amazing, right? That’s exactly what this book will help you to do.
Thankfully, I’ve learned how to be an effective conversationalist shortly after I started putting value on myself and what I bring to the table. People have been paying more attention to me because I make sure I have something important and valuable to share. And now you can too!
I’ve gone through all of the same struggles of communicating that you might be experiencing. Maybe you’ve read other books to help you with this, but it didn't quite suit you. But this book? I share some of the fundamental secrets I’ve learned that are important for you to become a great conversationalist. Say goodbye to the shyness and lack of social skills and say hello to new friends and improved relationships. Learn how to master small talk and keep a conversation going. And so much more!
