Summary of Trust the Plan by Will Sommer: The Rise of QAnon and the Conspiracy That Unhinged America

IN THIS SUMMARIZED BOOK, YOU WILL GET:

  • Chapter astute outline of the main contents.
  • Fast & simple understanding of the content analysis.
  • Exceptionally summarized content that you may skip in the original book

Will Sommer's book Trust the Plan is the definitive book on QAnon, which explains how it has gained a mainstream following among Republican lawmakers and ordinary citizens, the threat it poses to democracy, and how to reach those who have embraced the conspiracy and are disseminating its lies. It is a character study and a journalistic exposé, and Sommer visits Q's followers from their makeshift compounds to the rallies they are still holding. The great tragedy of this story is the legitimization of this ideology by mainstream politicians eager to gain access to a large and growing cohort of voters. Understanding why and how something like Q happens is an indispensable exercise, and in showing us how we got here we can chart a path out.

Summary of Trust the Plan by Will Sommer - Willie M. Joseph

    The Genesis

In late October 2017, an anonymous poster on a bustling, chaotic online message board called 4chan made an announcement to the world: former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton would be arrested between 7:45 AM - 8:30 AM EST on Monday. The user claimed that the Trump administration was coordinating with American allies to prevent Clinton from fleeing the country, and that if anyone doubted something big was coming, they should ask National Guard members if they'd been called up for duty on October 30. QAnon believers believed this was the start of their sacred text, the first of the Q drops that reveal the true state of the world. However, many 4chan users were just annoyed, as they had already witnessed a multiyear procession of self-proclaimed law enforcement and intelligence whistleblowers purporting to spill the country's most sensitive secrets. In 2017 alone, there had been CIAAnon and WH InsiderAnon, each of whom promised that an explosive revelation about Clinton was just around the corner.

The character who would become known as Q on 4chan initially found few followers, but as he ramped up his posting, he began to gain credibility among 4chan users. Q's clues, at least initially, seemed to be grounded in some sort of reality, and he appeared to get things right. After the October 30 deadline passed without any Clinton arrest, Q posted a picture from an airplane window that 4chan users became convinced could only have been taken from Air Force One, suggesting that Q was a Trump insider posting on the president's behalf. After the Air Force One photo, Furber and other early acolytes started contacting YouTube conspiracy theorists, urging them to make videos promoting QAnon. Belief in QAnon and its tenets has become mainstream, with 15% of respondents believing the core belief that the world's top institutions are run by Satan-worshipping pedophiles and 20% believing the Storm is coming soon.

Support for QAnon rises among more conservative groups, with 27% of white evangelical Christians saying QAnon's claims were at least mostly correct. Polling shows that QAnon believers don't always look like the wild-eyed mob at the Capitol, but can be parents at their children's school, fellow customers in the grocery store, or politicians. QAnon has a unique ability to recruit people who have never considered themselves conspiracy theorists before, creating a community where people radicalize one another. QAnon is a dark dream about sanctioned violence against political and cultural enemies. It began in 2003 when Christopher Poole, a lonely New York teenager, discovered a trove of anime on the Japanese image-sharing board
