Interview 1

Company : Shah Paper and Plastic Industries Limited ,Nadiad ,Gujarat. Owner : Mr. Kavit Shah. Workers : around 300. 3 shifts and 7 days a week. Clients : Wallmart and other retail chains in USA.

What kind of problems do you face with application of laws?


Initially unaware of norms and facing problems. Failed twice in social audit. Gradually came to know about norms. Currently stable and no problems regarding norms.

Are workers aware about these laws?And if not, are these laws being told to workers at the time of joining? Only some workers are aware about the laws. Workers are being told at the time of joinig and workers have to sign on the document of these laws. At the entrance notice board is kept where rules are written in English and Gujarati.

Do you face any difficulties in balancing the managerial & legal perspectives?
No there is no problem. No official union of workers. Workers do not approach legal action because of slow judiciary system and also because of high cost.

Share your experience with respect to laws.


For safety measures company has to keep - First Aid Kits - Eye Washers / Safety materials - Emergency lights (white and yellow) - other things kept as per social audit recommendations. - Fire Extinguisher

Incidents
Once fire had occurred during diwali time but no major injuries because of holiday time. Once workers hand was cut in deep dying machine. Company beared the cost of operation(plastic surgery).Salary hike was given to worker and he is still working.

Do the workers misuse these laws?

No misuse of laws.

Would you recommend any changes?


No recommendation but enforcement of these laws is beneficial for both.
