Other Health Impairment (OHI) .
Legal definition of Other Health Impairment:
The federal (IDEA) defines OHI as having limited strength, vitality, or alertness, including a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, that results in limited alertness with respect to the educational environment, that 1) is due to chronic or acute health problems such as asthma, attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, sickle cell anemia, and Tourette syndrome; 2) adversely affects a childs educational performance.
Provide a caring and nurturing classroom environment Help make up missed work Teach all students about the various types of health impairment and what they can do to not only help these students, but to make them feel like an equal member of the classroom Have an understanding of the students health impairment. Have an action plan for medical emergencies. Modifications to physical environment and classroom activities Assistive Technology Know and follow the students IEP

Characteristics: Each childs health
impairment is different and can range from mild to moderate to severe and from temporary to permanent or life threatening. As such, specific characteristics vary for each of the health impairments.
