Key Terms in Educational Psychology

Educational psychology defines and differentiates important terms related to education and psychology. It provides two definitions of education - developing individual capacities to prepare for society or culture, and the process by which society transmits values and knowledge. Schooling is defined as teaching and learning in formal environments. Psychology is defined as the scientific study of mind and behavior. Educational psychology combines psychology and education to understand teaching and learning processes to improve methods, covering topics like learning theories and cognitive development. Learning is defined as a relatively permanent change in behavior from experience, while teaching is purposefully directing the learning process.
