Pharmacists have a substantial yet a somewhat overlooked contribution to
people’s health around the world. Although doctors may diagnose illnesses and
prescribe medicines however, the preparation and production of those complex
medicines requires the specialist skills of a pharmacist. The expertise and the
numerous hours spent in the lab is what helps save millions of lives worldwide.
For a pharmacist, creating a new tablet, packed into something smaller than a
one pence coin with the power to cure a person of their illness is a scientific
wonder in itself and a sense of emotional and professional satisfaction. For this
reason, I would like to be involved within industrial pharmacy by researching and
working alongside technology for the development of new medicines and
ensuring their safety and quality for worldwide use.
I believe Chemistry will help me a great deal within industrial pharmacy as whilst
making and researching new drugs, I will have to use chemistry skills such as
finding the concentrations of different chemicals to put in a mixture for example
providing a bipolar disorder patient with lithium carbonate. Pharmacists also
need to know how this will affect the patients’ body which required the in-depth
knowledge of biology. Both these key subjects will help me to further build on my
foundation of scientific knowledge.
I believe I am a confident individual. I regularly build on my confidence and
communication skills by my keenness to stand up in front of an audience and
explain key principals and ideas in chemistry. This confidence in my
communication skills will aid my communication with a wide range of people
within my community if they seek help in finding the correct medicine. I receive
regular positive feedback from teachers and classmates which further enhances
my confidence as well as my willingness to learn. The consolidation of my
understanding elevates my keenness of spreading my knowledge.
I recently helped prepare an OAP party and welcomed the guests to the night on
which I also performed onstage. On asking my friends their view of my
performance, I realised the extent of my confidence such that I had danced on
stage without being tense further heightening my confidence. My adoration for
chemistry all stemmed from numerous analogies used by my chemistry teacher
to help explain complex ideas. These inspired me to learn more about chemistry
in secondary school, which therefore helped me achieve an excellent grade.
Socialising within different cultures and communities comes natural to me. Being
brought up in London, one of the most culturally diverse cities of the world, I am
capable to communicate effectively and mingle within different communities.
This allows me to adapt myself around their personalities, allowing me to work
well with them. I am an enthusiastic sportsman and enjoy playing football on
Fridays and cricket on the weekends. Recently, I participated in a five-aside
football tournament with four other players I had never played with. On
becoming the captain, I used the opportunity to exercise my good leadership
skills allowing me to go forth and win the tournament.
My role model is a close friend to my dad who has a pharmacy degree and now
works for the very famous company GlaxoSmithKline. He has given me the
motivation and drive to work hard and achieve my goal.
