Left Alone

Where? James looked into the night sky with curiosity.

Up there to the left, James father pointed to a set of starts in the sky, Just
concentrate, it will come to you if you just focus, Mark gently grabbed James head and
directed it to the stars.
I dont see it! James squinting up trying to spot something.
Its just like a dipper James, just bigger. James father kept staring into the sky with
awe.
I, I think I see it!! I think I. James smiled and stared at the bright night sky looking at
the Big Dipper.
Right before James father could give James a hug, a dark, glowing explosion occurred
and blocked out all the stars. It stretched for miles and smaller black pockets were forming
from the dark explosion. Thats when James fell over and all he saw was the green striped
wallpaper of his room slowly disappear.
The sound of a heart monitor woke James up. James sprung up sweaty and cold. He
removed the needle in his arm and the nasal cannulas in his nose. James stood up and noticed
he was much taller. As he passed a mirror he noticed then of a calendar. The calendar read
May, 2046.
Where am I? James asked himself.
James pushed open his rooms door where he found a deserted hospital. Papers were
everywhere and tables were knocked over. James left his room to check some of the other
rooms. Many were the similarly messy, but others looked like they had just been cleaned by a
maid. After James checked all the rooms, he knew he was alone.

The sound of rain on pavement led James to the door. It was closed but not locked.
James turned the cold wet knob and opened the creaking door. What was outside the door

shocked James. The hatred and power of these symbols. A green circle with a triangle crossed
out made James feel that he had seen these before.
Perhaps I have seen it before, James thought, staring aimlessly into the symbol trying
to remember.
Paper and cardboard floated aimlessly through the streets. Stores had been broken
into and robbed. All that was left were some grey, dripping buildings. James flicked his head
back to remove loose blond hair from his eyes so that he could see better. Just out of the
corner of his eye James saw something quick move down a long one-way street. He followed
the object into a corner. This time he got a better look of the thing. It was a girl.

Hey! called out James. I dont want to hurt you. I just want to know where I am!
Thats when James realized not only did he not know where he was, he didnt even know who
he was. All he could remember was his name. Carved into his mind was the name James.

James pursued the girl until they reached a dead end with wet, moist walls and poor
lighting.
I dont want to hurt you, James opened his arms to show he wouldnt harm her. My
name is James, I came from the hospital nearby. I dont know where this is or who I am,
Stay away from me! The girl backed away and bent down to pick-up a rock. I dont
want to hurt you!
James reached into his pocket and found something cold and smooth. A key? James
asked himself.
Please, James raised his hands trying to convince the girl that he wasnt trying to hurt
her. I wont hurt you,
The girl stepped forward into the light and asked Who are you?

The girl was very pretty. She had dark eyes and rich brown hair. She had the nicest
peach-skin. She was wearing an old ripped t-shirt that said Nike and a pair of torn jeans. She
also wore a pair of green sneakers and a small silver necklace.

Who are you? the girl asked again, this time more urgently. She looked around as if
someone was following her.
My name is James, James exasperated, Where is this place? Where am I? How did I
get here?
Where did you come from? the girl asked James, looking at him with an intently stare.
I dont know, James struggled to remember, I just came out of the hospital, then I
saw you running,
Were you attacked!? The girl eagerly asked at James. She grabbed her leg and tried to
rub it.
Attacked? James asked. Attacked by what?
Attacked by the Vills! the girl yelled.
Vills? What the heck is a Vill? James asked when he noticed the girls left thigh was
bleeding.q
Are you saying you dont know who the Vills are? the girl asked.
No, I dont know what you are talking about, James said, slowly moving towards the
girl. What happened to your leg? We need to get you help! James turned and started to leave
the little corner, Ill go look for someone to help us you stay he-
NO! Stop! You cant go out there, the girl said anxiously as she reached out to grab
Jamess arm, They will see you and attack us both. We would never make it out! The girl
pulled James through a door and onto a dark store that had broken glass everywhere and cloths
all over the floor. Sorry, we couldnt talk there, the girl said as she planted herself down on a
table after she blocked the door with it. Where did you come from? Ive never seen another
person for a long, long time.

Sitting down on dirty wood floor and trying to remember his past. Im not sure, I just
came from the hospital down the street, Looking back at the girls leg, he asked, What is your
name?
The girl stared at James as if trying to stare him to death. My name? Oh, umm.. My
name is the same color as your umm EYES! the girl yelled as if trying to play a guessing
game.
James thought and remembered, Hazel? James asked the girl and himself. Your name
is Hazel? as James tried to remember himself.
Yes! The girl yelled enthusiastically. Oh yes, now I can remember. My name is Hazel!
Hazel yelled in a huge relief.
Wait, James said realizing something and standing up. Are you saying that you dont
remember who you are either?
Yeah, I just woke up in an ambulance and I had no idea of who or what I was, Hazel
said, looking down at the ground trying to remember. Did the same happen to you?
Yeah, James said, helpfully also looking down trying to remember. I woke up in the
hospital over across the street and I had no idea what had happened. I just came out and saw
you running! Hazel? James asked, worryingly. What were you running from?
You didnt see it? Hazel asked, also worried. I was running from a Vill. She said
showing him her bleeding leg. I saw it down by the gas station and I ran. I accidentally tripped
and cut my leg on some glass. I think Im okay now.
Where did the Vills come from? Who are they? James asked doubtfully, while
watching Hazel tend to her wound.
Hazel opened a sling-bag she had and took out a wrinkled old newspaper. A few weeks
ago when I woke up in the ambulance, I also found this newspaper next to me. It says that a
large pocket emerged in front of the atmosphere. The pocket let the Vills through into our solar
system. We dont know where the pocket leads to, but it is still open. The paper also says that
most of the population left Earth and fled to Angoria 12. The remainders on Earth either died or
will be dead soon.

How did we get here? James asked, looking around the store for anything good and
highly doubting Hazel knew either. Had they been put there by the same people? Were there
others? James ran through hundreds of questions but somehow knew that Hazel would have
the answers to very few.
I dont know, Hazel said, obviously frustrated Hazel threw a rock on the ground
through a glass display. Damn! The Vills might have heard that! Hazel yelled furiously
throwing another rock at the ground.
At that moment they heard a scraping sound outside the barricaded door. Hazel
grabbed Jamess mouth so that he wouldnt make any noise.

Chapter 2
For about a minute they sat there hardly breathing until the scraping sound slowly
subsided. What the hell was that! James whispered, watching Hazel barricade the door with
more clothes racks and tying her wound with a sleeve from a shirt they found in the store.
That James, was a Vill, Hazel said, as James got up to help Hazel block the door with
more racks. Vills can hear very well even through this door. If they had heard us... well Ill just
say we would have been in big trouble.
For a while they both just sat there until James got up and started to look around the
store. Hazel, James asked picking up a Casio wrist watch. If there were survivors where
would they have headed? Placing the watch on his wrist and adjusting it.
Opening the sling-pack again Hazel checked the newspaper. Oh, here Hazel said
turning the newspaper and pointing to the article. Here, it says all remaining people near the
west coast should head towards Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for shelter with military protection
against the Vills.

Thats great! James said enthusiastically standing up and stretching his hand out to
help Hazel up. We just need to figure out where we are.
Hazel reached out, grabbed James hand, and pulled herself up. No, Hazel said sternly
wiping the dirt off of her feet. Its too dangerous. We may get ambushed by the Vills, and how
will we find our way there?
James paced around trying to think of an answer. Finally he concluded, Its our only
chance Hazel, James started to remove the barricade around the door. If we want to survive,
we need to go now.
Where are you going? Hazel asked, regretting her question immediately. James stop.
We have no idea where we are, we dont know how to get there, and God knows if we would
even
SURVIVE
!
James moved all the debris away from the door and gripped the cold door knob, I
understand if you dont want to come, James opped the door slightly first to peek out the
door. It was still light out so James shaded his eyes with his hand, but I need to go, I need to
find my father. James opened the door and started towards the open bridge. How do I
remember that? James whispered to himself with a glimmer of hope.
Hazel stayed in her spot and thought over and over. I should help him, hes the only
person I know, but well never make it, its too far. Hazel heard a struggle and a garbage can
fell over. She didnt think, she just ran to help her only friend.

What Hazel saw hadnt surprised her. It was a Vill. The Vill was about the same size as a
dog, green with 4 legs and a rough back. The mucus that was all over the Vill made it stand out
from the rest. The Vill that had walked passed the store they were at before. James! Hazel
yelled, she grabbed a rusty broken pipe from the ground and approached James and the Vill.
Hazel gripped the pole with her dominant right hand, she could feel the sweat coming from her
forehead. She swung and hit the Vill right in the head. The Vill toppled towards Earth still
gripping James. Hazel swung again, and again with the pipe until the Vill laid motionless on the
rough concrete floor.

James grabbed his arm and tore a piece of fabric from the bottom of his shirt. He
wrapped it around the wound on his arm to stop the bleeding. Thanks, James said trying to
change Hazels mind. I dont know what happened, James rubbed his head where he found a
little more blood. One moment I was walking over to the bridge, and the next he had his hand,
or what ever that is around my throat. James stood up and grabbed his arm. He leaned against
a green, abandoned, Kia.
James, Hazel asked bitterly, Do you really want to go to Caesars Palace? Hazel
covered the Vill in an old car cover and continued to talk. I know you want to find your father
and all, but what if there isnt anyone left? Hazel paused, hesitating to think about what she
should say. What if it was overrun? What if theyre all gone? What if we have been left alone?
James sat depressed and disappointed at what Hazel said. Its our best and probably
only chance to survive Hazel, James tightened the cloth again around his arm, You can do
whatever you want, but Im going no matter what. James got off the Kia and headed towards
the red bridge.
James! Hazel called walking towards the Kia. Why dont we take a car? Hazel
reached into the shattered into window and grabbed a pair of keys. Do you know how to
drive?

Chapter 3
Im on a highway to hell! Im on a highway to hell! James sang while driving the
green Kia.

Would you please turn that down! Hazel yelled over the music. Why do boys
like rock music? Its so stupid.
James laughed and stuck his arm out of the window. Do you think that you have
family? Keeping his eyes on the road James kept humming the music.
Family? Hazel asked herself. I dont know? She leaned back farther into the
cushioned seat. I cant remember anything but how to speak, Hazel rolled down her
window to air out the car more. Maybe I do, but all I know is that I wont have any
feelings for them.

The sun was still bright and the heat was pounding on them. The road looked
endless and so did the desert sand. For a few more hours they rode inside the car in the
heat of the day.
Hazel, finally exhausted from the heat Stop the car, James slowed the car
down, Theres a gas station up ahead, The car pointed towards an old abandoned gas
station and James stopped the car next to a pump. Nature calls. Hazel said
sarcastically.
James exited the car and grabbed the pump nozzle, Never know if itll still
work, James unscrewed the gas cap and placed the nozzle in. He grabbed a broken
brick of the ground and prepared to throw it. Here goes, James bashed the pump
monitor with the brick and to his surprise the gas started to pump. Free gas! James
laughed.
Hazel urgently rushed into the gas station. Wheres the toilet? she asked
herself. Hazel scanned the the room and found lots of food and drinks that she grabbed
off the shelves. Finally she found the bathroom, Nice! Hazel rushed into the restroom
but screamed after what she had found in there.

Chapter 4
Hazel ran out of the gas station, James! James! James was rocking out to AC/DC in the
car. James noticed Hazel and ran out of the car.
What? Hazel what?! James ran over to Hazel and he stopped her, Hazel, what
happened? James said this time more calmly.
Theres ther.. there is a, a V.. Vill! Hazel whispered horrified and shocked. She started
to pick up the brick to protect herself.
Stop, James said taking the brick from her. What exactly happened? James took the
brick put it aside and picked up a pole.
Still shaky Hazel said, I was looking for the bathroom, and when I went into it there was
a a.. a Vill! She grabbed the brick again of the ground.
OK, James and Hazel slowly advanced towards the gas station with their makeshift
weapons at hand. Where is the bathroom? James asked Hazel as she pointed towards a
corner behind the refrigerator of sodas and ice teas. The door was light brown and the
restroom sign was rusty. James slowly advanced towards the door of the women's restroom.
He grabbed the cold knob and motioned to Hazel to wait for him. James slowly turned the knob
until he yelled, NOW! They both ran into the restroom with their weapons held high. What
they saw surprised them.

Wheres the Vill?! Hazel said angrily. She dropped the brick to pick up a another rusty
pipe she found on the ground. It must have gotten away!
They both exited the gas station cautious until the got to their car. Everything was
exactly as they had left it and nothing had changed. They grabbed all the food and drinks at the
gas station and they headed back to the road.
There really was a Vill there, Hazel tried to convince James, Im not a crazy person.
Hazel opened a bag of pretzels. It was green and it was big, bigger than me.
Hazel, its fine, James said. I believe you, Hazel handed James a bag of Doritos. Do
you still have that newspaper? James asked as Hazel opened her slingbag to retrieve the
newspaper. Could you read me the address of Caesars Palace? I need to import it into the GPS.
Yeah, Hazel flipped the paper to the article with the address to Caesar Palace.
Ready? Hazel asked James.
James pulled over to the side of the road again. He opened the monitor on the car to
the GPS. Ya, James told Hazel.
Ok, Hazel began to read the address to James, 3570 South Las Vegas Boulevard,
Hazel read to James. Need me to repeat it? Hazel asked.
James started to drive again until he realized something, How did I remember how to
drive to Caesars Palace all this way without the GPS?
Ya, Hazel responded, Sometimes I have some feelings of Deja vu or that I do
something that I didnt know I could do. Hazel took another bite out of her bag of pretzels. Do
you think we were sent here for a reason? Hazel took more bites out of her bag of pretzels this
time more nervously and quickly. Maybe we were sent here by our people, Hazel shuttered,
Or maybe Hazel paused, Maybe the,
Maybe what? James asked curiously also taking a bite from his bag of Doritos. Maybe
what Hazel? James asked again this time worried.
I was just thinking, Hazel paused, Well, well maybe we were sent by the Vills. Hazel
quickly ate the rest of her pretzels and looked worryingly at James.
James kept driving and didnt keep his eyes off the road, I may not know why we are
here Hazel, James started to accelerate the car, but I know we were not sent here as Vill

spies. James said trying to reassure Hazel, Now, lets see how fast this baby can go! James
just passed 90mph just as the sun started to set.

Chapter 5
Were almost there, James said to Hazel shaking her a little to wake her up. Hazel was
sleeping in a small blue pancho they also had found in the gas station. James didnt want to
wake Hazel because she looked so peaceful sleeping in the car seat.
Hazel opened one eye still half asleep, Wha what? Hazel said drowsily as she wiped
the drool of her face. Hazel patted down her hair and opened another bag of pretzels.
Ah, nothing, James said pointing to the city, I was just saying were almost there!
James said.
Finally! Hazel said exasperated. She laid back down and sunk back into the seat, Now
wake me up when we get there.
James laughed, No problem there princess, James said sarcastically. Just make sure
you atleast try to get up when we get to the building,
Hazel grunted and rolled over again, Whatever, she said.

The city was very messy. There were cars everywhere, but none of them were driving.
The streets were also totally deserted and there was trash flying across the roads. The graffiti
went as far the eye could see. There was dust flying everywhere and there was glass all around
the buildings and the huge shopping centers. All the buildings were deserted and desolate until
they reached the blocks around
Las Vegas Boulevard. The building there were nothing like the
rest of the city. They were packed to the brim with people and there were special ops
surrounding the whole area. There were military Jeeps painted black and yellow and there were
turrets mounted on a wall that was located on the perimeter of the area that stretched out for
a few hundred meters.

A few soldiers stopped James and Hazel at what seemed to be a perimeter checkpoint.
I need to see your fingerprint sir, The officer said in a deep, angry voice. The officer had a
name sewn into his yellow and black uniform. It read, Miller. Miller pulled a handheld object
off his belt and tooks James thumb.
James reluctantly gave his thumb to Miller. What are you doing? James asked
worryingly.
Miller placed James thumb onto a green plastic panel that was attached to the device.
The panel was large enough for just the tip of one finger and had the fingerprint icon on it. Im
just scanning your finger to make sure you have a record on our database so I can let you in,
Miller pressed a red circular button below the panel and device made a small humming sound
that meant it was scanning correctly. After the humming stopped a small beeping sound
emitted from the device. Miller pulled James finger off the scanner and he started to read
James file. This is strange, Miller said in a confused sort of tone.
James was rubbing a thin coating of gel off his finger when he heard Millers news.
Whats strange?
At that moment a door next to the checkpoint opened and a small man in a brown coat
came out. The man shouted, Miller! Open the gate and let them in! The man walked over to
Miller at a very fast pace. Once he reached Miller the man whispered, You never read this file,
you never let these people in, and you were in the lounge at this time. The man said to Miller.
Miller nodded and yelled to another man guarding the entrance, They checked out! Let
them in! The man at the entrance nodded and pressed a button that lifted a metal gate.
The man in the brown coat opened the back seat of the Kia and hopped in. Hi James,
The man put his seatbelt on and placed his arm around the passenger headrest. My name is
Dr. Abell, The man pointed to the name Abell sewn on his coat in dark gold. But no need to be
so formal, call me Robert. Robert relaxed in his seat and stretched his arm out, Welcome to
to the Ronin Sector.

The inside of the wall was much the same to outside the wall. The inside of buildings
were crowded with people and the streets were a huge mess. The walls were spraypainted with

graffiti and there were people wandering across the streets. Robert told them to drive and
turn into Caesars Palace. Caesars Palace was a huge 29 story building with the design of a
Roman city. The building had a water fountain and lots of statues of Roman people.

James drove onto the Caesars Palace parking lot and got out of the car. How do you
know who I am? James asked closing his and Dr. Abells car door.
Hazel got out of the car and stretched her arms and legs, Where are we? The group
started to walk towards the door of Caesars Palace. What is this place? Hazel got to the sleek
metal door and waited for Dr. Amell to get ahead of her.
Dr. Amell got in front of Hazel and James and passed through the automatic door. This
is Caesar's Palace! Dr. Amell said pointing to the super high roof and all the people at the slots
having fun. This is the only place we have now that people can come for fun, Amell pointed
looked at the people at the slots and looked back ahead down a long read hallway. This is also
the place where people can come to get their meals, To the right of the slots there was a large
cafeteria were a few hundred people were getting their meals on red plastic trays.
James followed behind Dr. Amell as they kept heading down the red hallway. Where
are we headed? James asked as they followed Dr. Amell down the red hallway. The hallway
was well lit and there were statues and paintings of ancient Rome everywhere.
The hallway was well lit and there were statues and paintings of ancient Rome
everywhere. We are headed to the main command center here in the Ronin sector, The end
of the hallway was met by a large metal elevator. You are a very important person James, Dr.
Amell said looking at James before pressing the elevator button. Did you know that?

The elevator was a cold and red. Next to the elevator buttons were some
advertisements for some restaurants in Caesars Palace. Dr. Amell took a key card from his back
pocket and placed it into a slot that fit the card perfectly. After just a few seconds the elevator
started to move downwards at an alarming rate.
James shifted his body to accommodate to the speed of the decline. Where are we
headed!? James asked grabbing the handle bar.

Dr. Amell looked the least bit worried as if he had done this 100 times. We are headed
down approximately 20,000 miles to a secret facility where we keep all the top level officials!
Dr. Amell yelled over the sound of the elevator. Fascinating, isnt it! Dr. Amell said glancing at
his watch, This elevator travels over 2,000 miles per second!
James glanced over at Hazel who seemed to have a hard time steadying herself. Are
you ok?! James asked as he started to make his way across the elevator to Hazel.
As James got closer, Hazel motioned to him to stay away with her hand.
Mmmmmmm! She moaned as she turned and vomited all over the food commercial. Ugh!
She said as she wiped her mouth. I dont like this, Hazel said to James wearily.
Dr. Amell looked back at his watch again and said, You might want to brace
yourselves! Dr. Amell grabbed the railing as his knuckles started to turn white. Here comes
the fun part!

Just as Dr. Amell started to say this the elevator started to speed up even more
dramatically. Dr. Amell kept his hold on the bar, but James and Hazel flew up to the top of the
elevator.
Hazel tried to move, but the speed forced her against the top of the elevator. I hate
this place even more! Hazel yelled now awake! Why the Hell do they have a murderous
elevator!
After just a few more seconds of this the elevator started to slow down. Both James and
Hazel fell back to the floor of the elevator and stood up. Their hair was pressed up and their
faces were forced into an awkward position.
Hazel fixed her hair and her shirt as she got ready to exit the door. Im never doing that
again! Hazel yelled storming out of the elevator door the moment it opened.
Oh dont worry! Dr. Amell called speeding up to mach Hazel, The ride back up is
more fun!

Chapter 6
The building they entered was like nothing either of them had seen before. The walls
were made of polished titanium, and the glass was 6 inches thick. The whole building was quite
large and cold.

START
Dr. Amell stopped them both at the entrance to the building. Welcome to F.A.V, Dr.
Amell led the group through the hallway. F.A.V. stands for Facility Against Vills, At the end of
the hallway Dr. Amell opened a door to an office that must have been his. The room was
clustered with pictures and diagrams of the Vills. This is my office, Dr. Amell started to clean
the mess off his desk embarrassed. Sorry about the mess, Dr. Amell said as he continued to
clean off his desk. Ive been doing a lot of research for the past few days and Ive started to
make some progress. Dr. Amell laughed nervously. I havent had much time to clean.
Dr. Amell, James said pausing and then correcting himself., Sorry, Richard, James
said. You said that I was a very important person, James rubbed his hands together, What
did you mean?
Dr. Amell sat down in his red chair. Please, sit Dr. Amell motioned for James and Hazel
to sit down. Well James, about two years ago when the Vills invaded you and your father were
the first to be evacuated. We had about 200 milleniums around the world to evacuate the
people incase of a global emergency. Im guessing you wont remember, but milleniums were
giant rockets designed to take 25 million people at a time to space and to survive for a few
decades until we could find another home of the Earth became habitable again. You and your
father were one of the first to get on a millenium and to get out of Earth. Your father was a very
important man. He was the key to the millenium and none of them could be activated without
his DNA. When your father when to inventory the cargo on the millenium you were on he was
attacked by a Vill. The Vill killed him. The security never made it in time. Later we found out

that 13 of the milleniums didnt launch because they had a system malfunction. They needed
his DNA and him to be living for them to be able to reboot the system. The only person that
would be able to reboot the system using his DNA would be you James. Of course with unison
of a key that he had.
Then James realized why he had the key and why he had been so attached to it. James
knew why he had been sent back.
Dr. Amell started to speak again this time looking at Hazel. To reboot the system 2 DNA
signatures needed to be registered at the same time along with the key I was telling you
about.
James reached into his pocket and grabbed the key. Is this the key you were talking
about Dr. ? He placed it on the desk hoping that he had the correct key.
Dr. Amell took the key and inspected it. He sighed and responded, Yes! Thank God! Dr.
Amell took the key and placed it into his desk.
James looked again worried and asked Dr. Amell, How do we get the other DNA
signature?
Dr. Amell took Hazels hand and looked into her eyes, James, Hazel is your sister.

Chapter 7
What!? Hazel exclaimed as she got up and looked back and from James and Dr.
Amell. No, You have this all wrong! Hazel started to walk in circles thinking, No, theres no
way!
Dr. Amell tried to calm Hazel by motioning for her to sit down. Hazel, I know this is hard
to accept, but James is your brother, Dr. Amell took out a manilla folder from his desk. He
opened it and there was a piece of paper with a picture of Hazel when what looked like when

she as 5 or 6. Next to the picture was what seemed to be a birth certificate and a citizens ID
code. Hazel, Dr. Amell stood up and tried to hug Hazel. I was a great friend of your father
when he was still around. Dr. Amell went back to his chair, I helped him design the life
support on the millenniums, Dr. Amells eyes started to tear, Your mother was one of the best
and most sweet people I had ever met.
James stood up and walked over to Hazel, Dr, James hugged Hazel, Could you run a
blood test just to make sure so that we dont have anything wrong?
Dr. Amell nodded, Of course, the doctor got out of his chair and opened the door,
But first, let me show you to your rooms.

The two of them followed Dr. Amell back into the elevator so they could reach the
surface of the building again.
Oh, no way! Hazel stepped back looking at the elevator, I am not doing that again!
Hazel scanned the building for an alternative path.
Dont worry, Dr. Amell smiled at Hazel deviously, This time is much more
entertaining! He pressed the elevator button, Theres no doubt about it! Dr. Amell said as
the three of them entered the elevator for the second time.
