Glasgow Outcome Scale Overview

The Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) is a 5-point scale used to assess recovery from brain damage or head injuries, ranging from dead (1) to good recovery (5). A score of 1 indicates dead, 2 indicates vegetative state, 3 indicates severe disability where the patient is able to follow commands but unable to live independently, 4 indicates moderate disability where the patient is able to live independently but unable to return to work or school, and 5 indicates good recovery where the patient is able to return to work or school. The scale was created by Jennett and Bond in 1975 to assess outcome after severe brain damage.
