The Dictionary defines Logistics as The procurement, maintenance and transportation of
military materials, facilities and personnel.
A US Air force Technical report in 1981 defines Logistics as the science of planning and
carrying out the movement and maintenance of Forces.
Generalizing for both Military as well as business organizations Logistics is that aspect of
business operation that deals with the design, development, acquisition, storage,
movement, distribution, movement, maintenance and disposition of materials, effective
and efficient deployment, movement and utilization of personnel, acquisition or
construction, maintenance, operation and disposition of facilities and acquisition and
furnishing of the services.
In 1991 the Councils of Logistics Management defines the Logistics as the process of
planning, implementing and controlling of efficient, effective flow and storage of goods,
services and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption for
the purpose of conforming to the customer expectations.
In 1996 Bowersox and Closs has defined Logistics Management as Logistics
Management includes the design and administration of system to control the flow of
materials, work-in-process and finished inventory to support business unit strategy.
