X FT Ygt: 2.3 Understand Parametric Equation

Parametric equations express the coordinates of points on a curve (x, y) as functions of an independent variable t, called the parameter. The derivatives of x and y with respect to t can be found using the chain rule. Specifically, the derivative of y with respect to x is equal to the derivative of y with respect to t divided by the derivative of x with respect to t. Examples are provided to demonstrate finding derivatives of parametric equations.

3 UNDERSTAND PARAMETRIC EQUATION

The Cartesian equation of a line is a law, which links the x-coordinate and y-coordinate of the general
point (x, y) on the line. It can sometimes be useful to involve a thrid variable, say t, and to
x  f  t y  g  t
third variable. These two equation, and
express x and y each as a function of this
are said to be the parametric equations of the line and t is the parameter.
