L’anonimo scrittore scrisse il testo in lingua Tamil nel diciannovesimo secolo e l’artefice della diffusione fu Ramana Maharishi, maestro vedanta (1879-1950) che lo suggeriva alle persone che conosceva personalmente.
Annamalai Swami, servitore personale di Ramana, dice: “In un’altra occasione, quando chiesi a Bhagavan (Ramana) di selezionare delle letture per me, egli mi diede una breve lista di sei libri: Kaivalya Navanitam, Ribhu Gita, Ellam Ondre, Swarupa Saram and Yoga Vasishta. Egli pose particolare enfasi su Ellam Ondre, dicendomi: ‘Se vuoi moksha (liberazione) scrivi, leggi e pratica le istruzioni in Ellam Ondre’.”
E' conosciuto come guida per la liberazione spirituale e il libro contiene la traduzione italiana e l'originale prima traduzione inglese del 1935 a cura di Vijai R. Subramaniyam.

PREFAZIONE
Gli uomini cercano la felicità e rifuggono dalla sofferenza. È lo stesso anche per gli altri esseri. Ciò va bene per il corso normale dell’umanità. Ma l’ordine più alto è teso verso la giusta condotta, sopportando pazientemente il bene e il male che ne può derivare. La comunanza con questi sarà duratura, mentre la comunanza con le persone comuni no. Il Bene perverrà al mondo solamente attraverso la comunanza con l’ordine più alto.
La domanda dunque sorge: Cosa è giusto?
Il punto è importante, ma la risposta non si trova. Perché?
Perché ciò che è giusto è determinato dalle circostanze. Per quanto esauriente possa essere un’opera scritta sull’argomento, ci saranno sempre circostanze non previste dall’autore. Perciò diventa necessario realizzare quella condizione che ci renderà capaci di valutare le varie circostanze e determinare ciò che è giusto.
Quella condizione è una sola. Non ci sono condizioni come questa. Anche se è unica, è straordinario che il saggio terreno la consideri estremamente rara. Nulla può essere più straordinario di questa. Quell’unica condizione è molto chiaramente insegnata nelle Upanishad. In questo libro io ho scritto la stessa verità secondo il mio modo di intendere.
L’ho considerato mio dovere. Non reclamo originalità. I sei capitoli di questo libro sono così strettamente interconnessi che qualche punto che ci si possa aspettare in un capitolo potrebbe essere trovato in un altro. D’altronde, alcuni punti che potrebbero non risultare chiari ad una lettura superficiale, diventeranno chiari con uno studio più preciso. Di più si potrebbe raccogliere da opere maggiori o dai Saggi.

1 UNITÀ
1. Tutto incluso il mondo visto da te e te stesso, il Veggente del mondo, è solo UNO.
2. Tutto quel che consideri come io, tu, egli, ella e esso, è solo UNO.
3. Ciò che consideri esseri senzienti e ciò che consideri esseri non senzienti, come la terra, l'aria, il fuoco e l'acqua è solo UNO.
4. Il buono, che deriva dal tuo considerare tutto come uno, non può aversi considerando ciascuno come separato dall'altro. Perciò tutto è UNO.
5. La conoscenza dell'unità del tutto è bene per te ed anche bene per gli altri. Perciò tutto è UNO.
6. Colui che vede Io sono separato
, tu sei separato
, egli è separato
e così via, agisce in un modo per sé e in un altro modo verso gli altri. Egli non può, così facendo, aiutare. Il pensiero io sono separato, gli altri sono separati
, è il seme da cui cresce l'albero delle differenti azioni in relazione alle differenti persone. Come può esserci un venir meno della rettitudine per una persona che conosce l'unità di se stesso con gli altri? Per quanto il germe della differenziazione: se persiste, persino inconsapevolmente, l'albero delle differenti azioni fiorirà. Perciò abbandona le differenziazioni. Tutto è UNO.
7. Chiedi: Se nel mondo tutte le cose appaiono differenti, come posso considerare tutto come UNO? C'è una via per guadagnare questa conoscenza?
La risposta è: Nello stesso albero vediamo foglie, fiori, bacche e rami che sono differenti uno dall'altro, ma sono uno perché inclusi nella parola albero. La sua radice è la stessa, la sua linfa è la stessa. Similmente, tutte le cose, tutti i corpi, tutti gli organismi provengono dalla stessa sorgente e vivificati da un singolo principio vitale
. Perciò tutto è UNO.
8. O buon uomo! L'affermazione Tutto è UNO
è buona o cattiva? Pensa per te stesso. Così come una persona sarà sempre virtuosa considerando se stesso come gli altri e gli altri come se stesso, può il male attaccare se stesso a colui che conosce se stesso essere gli altri e gli altri essere se stesso? Dimmi se c'è un miglior modo per ottenere il bene se non la conoscenza dell'Unità? Certamente altri metodi non possono essere buoni come questo. Come si può amare gli altri più di quando li si conosce come essere se stesso? In verità li si conosce in una amorosa unità essendo essi veramente
