What is base-13?
I'm only 13 years old, so please, don't go too far into maths! :)
What is it, and how is it that when you multiply 4 and 9 together in base-013 you get 42?
I don't understand.

Sorry, I understand it now. I've worked out an easier way to understand it. :P
Err, I think 6(13)x9(13) was 42.
6x9 = 54 and 54 in Base-13 is 42. Is this right?

this is a pretty advanced topic for a 13 year old...
we're used to living in a base-10 world. what that means is that when you start counting
from 1, when you get to the tenth number, you start going to two digit numbers, like so:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
in base-13, you don't go to 2 digits until the 13th number. any numbers above 9 are turned
into letters instead. here's how you'd count to 10 in base-13:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C 10
i'll keep counting so you see how it works:
10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 1A 1B 1C 20 21 22.... etc.
now, multiplying 4 and 9 in base-13 is a little tricky. you can do it in base-10 first and
then convert the result to base-13:
4*9 = 36
how do we convert 36 to base-13? well, i'm sure there are some complicated formulas,
but here's an easy way... you know there are 13 numbers between 1 and 10. So, to get to
20, we have to count to 13 twice:
13 + 13 in base-10 = 20 in base-13
26 in base-10 = 20 in base-13
now we have to add 10 to get to 36 in base-10:
26 + 10 in base-10 = 20 + 10 in base-13
36 in base-10 = 2A in base-13
so, i don't know who told you that 4*9=42 in base-13, but they were wrong....
think about it another way: to multiply 9 times 4, you'd have to add 9 to itself 4 times (or
add 4 to itself 9 times), right?
9+9+9+9=9*4
so, let's count through the digits to check our work. the first 9 are easy:

now let's carefully count 9 more:
A B C 10 11 12 13 14 15
here's the third set of 9:
16 17 18 19 1A 1B 1C 20 21
and the last set:

22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 2A
so, our answer of 2A is correct.
