MODAL ANALYSIS
Most noise and vibration problems are related to resonance
phenomena, where the operational forces excite one or more
modes of vibration that lie
within the frequency range of
the forces.
Any dynamic response of a structure can be reduced to a set of
mode shapes, each with an associated modal frequency and
damping. These modal parameters constitute the dynamic
properties of the structure and
provide for a complete dynamic
description of the structure.
Modal testing is the process of
experimentally determining all
the modal parameters. There are
two types of testing Classical
and Operational Modal Analysis.
In Classical Modal Analysis the
structure under test is stimulated with measurable forces. The
vibration response/force ratio is
studied using FFT techniques.
Impact Hammers
The range of applications for modal
data is vast and includes:
Checking modal frequencies
Forming qualitative descriptions
of mode shapes
Verifying and improving analytical models
Predicting: the response to
assumed excitations, the change
in dynamic properties due to
physical modifications, the necessary modifications required to
obtain a desired dynamic property, the combined behaviour
when two or more structures
are coupled together
Classical Modal Analysis ranges
from a simple mobility test with an
impact hammer to multi-shaker testing of large and complex structures with hundreds of response
accelerometers. Brel & Kjrs PULSE
