Teen Suicide and Bullying Inquiry Proposal

This document is a proposal by Ashunti Crockwell for an inquiry project on teen suicide and bullying. The proposal outlines Crockwell's guiding questions on how many teens commit suicide due to bullying and what can be done to stop it. Crockwell wants to study this topic to understand what brings teens to consider suicide and to potentially help decrease suicide rates. The proposal summarizes that suicide is a leading cause of death for teens and predicts the project will learn how many teens attempt suicide and what is being done to reduce it. Crockwell plans to read the book "By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead" and cites its relevance as focusing on helping teens value life over suicide.

My Inquiry Project Proposal

Name: Ashunti Crockwell

Ms. Lance
American Literature, Period 2
October 19, 2016

Topic of Inquiry (social issue affecting America):

Teen suicide and bullying
Guiding Question(s):
How many teens commit suicide because they are bullied? What can we do to stop this?
Rationale (or explanation for why you want to study this topic all semester):
I want to study this topic because I know some people who have tried to commit suicide and I think the
topic is super sad. I wanted to learn what brings people to a state where they feel like they need to end their
lives.
Summary (of what you already know about the topic at beginning of your inquiry):
I know as of today suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24 and the second leading
cause of death for college-age youth and ages 12-18. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide
than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung
disease, combined.

Prediction (about what you think you will discover or hope to discover during your study) :
I think Ill learn about how many teens try to commit suicide and also I hope I can learn what the world is
doing to decrease suicide with teens today. I hope someone is trying to change and help the cause.
Title and Author(s) of book to read (and Genre):
By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters
Discussion (of the relevance of this topic in a bigger context i.e., the so what?):
Knowing how to help with teen suicide prevention can save lives because it focuses on helping
teens realize that life is too special to commit suicide. I know this topic is relevant because if there's anyway
to decrease teen suicide and save peoples lives then I feel people should know about it.
