Analyzing Stereotypes in Hotel Babylon

The document discusses stereotypes presented in the TV show Hotel Babylon. It makes three key points: 1) The show presents both positive and negative stereotypes. The migrant workers are portrayed positively, while the white migrant officers are portrayed negatively as racist bullies. 2) Stereotypes can be held against one's own group, as seen by the negative stereotyping of white people in the show. 3) Some stereotypes portrayed in the show, such as migrants being persecuted, match real-life stereotypes. The show provides confirmation for the audience's existing beliefs about different groups.

Stereotypes
Task 1
Stereotypes arent always negative: this is evident from the migrants in
the scene. They are being presented as the protagonists of the show and
are shown to be good people. However, the migrant officers are white and
are stereotyped as racist bullies. This is an example of a negative
stereotype.
They arent always about minorities or less powerful groups: in the Hotel
Babylon extract, the migrants are being presented as the less powerful
group. The white migrant officers are being presented as the powerful
group in the scene.
They can be held against ones own group: this is true in the hotel
Babylon extract because the white people in the extract are presented as
racist bullies. The majority of the people that watch the show will be white
which means the stereotypes are about their group.
They are not rigid or unchanging: Perkins claimed that even though a
stereotype has been fixed into society, it doesnt mean that it cant
change. This is especially true in the extract of Hotel Babylon where the
migrant workers are all working professional jobs. The receptionist at the
front desk is also a woman. This is an example of a changed stereotype.
Around 50-60 years ago, this job wouldve been stereotyped to belong to
a man. However, this has changed in recent years and now receptionist
jobs are stereotyped to belong to women.
Theyre not always false: there are many stereotypes shown in the extract
that are quite true to real life. Migrants are persecuted a lot in real life just
as they are in the clip from Hotel Babylon. In the clip, they are shown to
be scared and helpless. This is similar to how they are shown by the
media platforms like the news in real life.
Task 2
Festingers theory can be used to explain why shows like Hotel Babylon
are so popular. He claims that we seek conformation for our beliefs. Hotel
Babylon shows common stereotypes that act as a conformation for the
audiences beliefs on groups of people. For example, Hotel Babylon shows
the common stereotype of migrants being persecuted, scared and weak.
The majority of the audience will most likely believe this and the show will
act as a conformation of their beliefs.
