Art Integration Lesson Plan for Kindergarten

This art integration lesson plan template outlines a kindergarten lesson integrating visual art, literacy, and social skills around the book "The Cow that Went Oink". The lesson begins with a discussion of friendship and individuality. Students will then read the book, practice comprehension skills, and complete a drawing and writing activity where they draw an animal making the sound of another animal they chose. This allows students to express who they are while learning it is okay to be different and that differences allow people to learn from each other. Formative and summative assessments involve checking students' art, writing, and understanding of the lesson.

lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion
,please be very specific, walk me through step by step of the What

Inspired book: The Cow that Went Oink

Predicting, literacy skills, and writing skills. Using the
pictures, predict what the story is about. Use literacy skills to
comprehend what the book is about and make connections.
Use writing skills to form words and sentences using
inventive spelling.
3. Social Skills
Friendship and Individuality: Learn about how to be a friend,
we are all different and that provides opportunities to learn
new things about our friends.

learn new and different things from/about our friends.

2. Introduce The Cow that Went Oink book. Discuss with the
students that this book is about a cow who is embarrassed
because he is different but his friends teach Cow a valuable
lesson.
3. Practice Literacy skills. Before reading, flip through the
book showing the students the pictures. Have the students
make predictions in their heads based off of the pictures in
the book. Have them keep their predictions quietly to
themselves.
4. Read The cow that Went Oink to my students.
5. Practice comprehension skills. Ask students, What made
Cow different? Who did Cow meet? What did Cow learn
from his friends?
6. Discuss with students that they are going to choose two
animals to draw. One animal they will draw and they will give
that animal the sound of the other animal they chose. Show
them an example of my drawing of a dog saying Quack.
7. Discuss with them that I chose a dog because I get very
happy and love to be around people but I made my dog say
quack because sometimes I feel small and shy like a duck.
8. Dismiss students to their working spots. Instruct them to
get their pencil boxes and fundations chart.
9. Hand out white construction paper to my students.
10. Visit with students while they are working and talk about
the animals they chose.
11. Remind students to use their writing skills and use speech
bubbles.
12. When students are finished, I will ask a few students if I
can show our friends their art and talk about the animals they
drew.

Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or demonstrate)*:

Opening activity will be discussing how to be a friend to one
another and because we are all different, we can learn new things
from our friends. I will show and read The Cow that Went Oink.

Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set, how will student share what

they learned):

Students will participate in a drawing and writing activity.

They will show what they learned by writing about how

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template

they relate to the animal they chose and something they

are really good at that they could teach a friend.

Formative Assessment strategy: (how will you assess while the learning
is happening?)

Formative assessment will take place during the art and writing
activity. The teacher can see prior knowledge the students are
using when they are writing about the animal they chose and what
they can share with a friend.

Summative Assessment strategy*:

A checklist will be available for the teacher to document
what the students have learned, students used writing
skills and inventive spelling, students wrote about the
animal and what they can teach or share with a friend.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)
Students should already know qualities to be a friend and what it means to be kind. Students will need to know how to make
predictions, write words and form sentences.
Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning
I will use a SmartBoard to demonstrate drawing an animal.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
This lesson will allow students to express who they are through an animal and animal sound of choice. They will do this
through drawing it and solving how to draw the animal.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
I will do this by implementing a show and tell day into our classroom and encourage students to help each other during
centers. This way, students will be able to teach and share with their friends about themselves. Students will also show
kindness through helping friends at centers if they have difficulty doing an activity.
Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.

To cater to the needs of all learners I will provide a list of animals and animal sounds to each table pod. For cultural and language
differences I chose to show the work of an artist that creates the sounds of animals in different languages. I will regularly check on
the students of other language differences and explain the instructions again if they are struggling.
