Labor Induction Overview and Guidelines

Labor induction involves stimulating contractions before spontaneous labor begins, with or without ruptured membranes. Stimulation of inadequate spontaneous contractions is called labor augmentation. Indications for induction include post-term pregnancy, preeclampsia, and decreased amniotic fluid. Factors like multiparity increase the success of induction. The Bishop score is used to assess cervical ripening and likelihood of successful induction, evaluating dilation, effacement, station, consistency, and position. Regular contractions are defined as 6 or more in 10 minutes, while prolonged contraction lasts over 2 minutes. Tachysystole occurs if regular or prolonged contractions cause non-reassuring fetal heart rate patterns.
