Breakthrough 1 Unit 5 Lesson 2 Subject: Getting Around

Time: 90 minutes
Assumptions: Ss know many popular shops and other places in town, and are comfortable using a quite a few
prepositions of place.

Aims: Ss are able to ask for, give and listen to directions.

Objectives: Ss get comfortable using English in real life situations.

Materials: Prepositions worksheets - Lock and Key papers Question sheets

Vocabulary: Popular shops and other places in towns

Sentence Structure: How do I get there? (Go straight ahead). Then (turn right) at the (traffic lights)..

Review of Ss given worksheet where they fill the gaps with correct Prepositions 12
prepositions of prepositions of place, reviewing prepositions and adding a few worksheets
place not covered in the last lesson (close to/near, in front of,
behind). Also reviews knowledge of 8-point compass.

Answers:

2 between
3 southeast
4 around the corner from
5 across from
6 north
7 behind
8 in front of
9 close to (near)
10 northwest

Ss feed-back answers. T corrects as necessary and writes on


board in vocab box.

Lock and Key Give each student, or pairs of students (depending on class Lock and Key 18
game with size) a piece of paper containing either a written direction or a papers
directions picture of one.

Students/Pairs must walk around the classroom and find their


corresponding match (e.g. turn right matched with a picture
showing turn right). When they find their match, they sit
down with them each key has found its lock.
Ss feed-back answers and T writes these on the board model
and drill as necessary.

Explain that we usually say down the street but rarely up the
street means the same as to go along the street.

Pair slap game In the centre of the board, write/draw the chart below. 10
with selected
directions Make sure the chart is big enough and low enough for both of
students hands to slap the separate boxes.

Divide class into 2 teams they choose team names


1 student from each team comes to the front T says a pair
such as go south first person to slap wins a point have Ss
shout out the instructions as game progresses.

Congratulate winning team.

Remove from board.

Sentence T shows a map using PowerPoint, or otherwise hands out the Question sheets 15
Structures/ pictures of the town (below).
Dialogue
Elicit government building as a place in town - vocab

T writes the following dialogue on the board (from last lesson):

A: Excuse me. Is there a (post office) near here?


B: Yes, theres a (post office) on (Pineapple Street).

Briefly review the above.


Now add:
A: Great! How do I get there? - practice.
T points to wherever he/she feels would be a good starting
point for a journey to the post office - perhaps mark it with a
piece of blu tack.

Choose 2 good Ss to come to the front and role-play, eliciting


and writing directions as they say them (encourage the route
that you want them to take, for greater/easier difficulty), etc.

Have Ss finish the conversation with:

A: Thanks a lot!
B: Youre welcome.

As the above is in progress, have Ss write the dialogue in their


notebooks.

Repeat the above with a different pair and a new destination


and/or starting point.

BREAK TIME
Practice In pairs, Ss role-lay using the dialogue T marks a starting point PowerPoint 20
and chooses and writes 3 or 4 destinations that they must presentation
reach have partners swap roles occasionally so that they each
get to listen to and give directions.

Write the destinations on the board.

Monitor during activity check a couple of pairs at the end of


the activity award points.

Basketball game Divide class into 2 teams. ball 15

Choose 1 student from each team (2 students) to give
directions to a chosen destination, with a 3rd student asking for
directions in the first place.

The 2 students giving the directions take it in turns to give


directions for every correct direction, they get to shoot a ball
at the bin/trashcan if it goes in 3 points to their team if it
hits it 1 point.

Try the above with 2 sets of students and places congratulate


the winning team.
