Instrumentation Exam Guide

This document appears to be an exam for an Instrumentation and Control course. It contains multiple questions covering various instrumentation topics: 1. Questions cover definitions of terms like dead band and hysteresis. It also asks about the measurement sensitivity of a platinum resistance thermometer and the functions of elements in a Bourdon tube pressure gauge. 2. Other questions ask about the displacement produced by different pressures on diaphragms, the differences between systematic and random errors, and the theory and operation of gas filled thermometers. 3. Thermocouples are also discussed, including the laws of thermocouples and calculating unknown temperatures from thermocouple readings. Radiation pyrometers are explained as

REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM

Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
 Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions.
 Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed.

1A) Define the following: a.) Dead Band b.) Hysteresis (02)

1B) Define the term Transducers. Differentiate between Active and Passive
Transducers. (02)
1C) The following resistance values of a platinum resistance thermometer
were measured at a range of temperature. Determine the measurement
sensitivity of the instrument in Ω/ °C
Resistance(Ω) 307 314 321 328 (02)
Temperature(°C) 200 230 260 290

1D) Explain the functions of following element with respect to Bourdon tube
pressure gauge with digital read-out.
a.) Detector Transducer element
b.) Secondary Transducer element (04)
c.) Variable Manipulation element
Show the generalized measurement system for the above system with
Block diagram.
2A) A pressure of 256kPa acting on a flat diaphragm produces a
displacement of 0.2mm at its centre. What pressure would produce same (03)
displacement if the diameter of the diaphragm is made twice and
Its thickness made half & material used is same.
2B) Differentiate between Systematic and Random errors with suitable
examples. (03)

2C) Explain the theory of working of gas filled thermometer with neat sketch.
What is the range for which this thermometer is used? (04)
