I. Title: Elephant Toothpaste Lab

This lab report describes an elephant toothpaste experiment. The purpose was to observe a chemical reaction. Materials included a plastic bottle, dish soap, yeast, warm water, hydrogen peroxide, and food coloring. Hydrogen peroxide was added to the bottle first. Then a yeast mixture was added, which caused foaming and overflow as the contents reacted and heated up over three minutes, producing marbled colored foam that was hotter than the original ingredients.

I. Title: Elephant Toothpaste Lab

II. Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to observe a chemical reaction.

III. Materials:
• 1 591 mL empty plastic soda bottle (20 oz.)
• 60 ml of Dawn (1/4 c. dish soap)
• 9 grams of Active Dry Yeast (1 T)
• 60 ml warm H2O
• 120 ml 40% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide)
• a few drops of food coloring

IV. Procedure: The H2O2 was put into an empty plastic bottle. Next, the yeast was mixed

with warm water and set aside while dish soap was added to the bottle. Then the yeast
mix was added into the bottle.

V. Results: The instant that the yeast mix was added to the bottle, the contents began to
foam and overflow to bottle. The reaction took a little over three minutes. One of the
interesting observations was that the color of the foam was marbled. Orange in some
places, blue in others. Another observation was that due to the chemical reaction taking
place inside the bottle, the foam was much hotter than any of the individual ingredients
that had originally been put into the bottle.
