Understanding the Internet Basics

The internet is a network of networks that connects millions of computers around the world and allows people to share information globally. It uses common protocols like IP and TCP to link thousands of computer networks together and exchange information. The internet community now consists of students, scientists, large corporations, non-profits, governments, and individuals who all use it for purposes like research, work, and entertainment.

infrastructure supporting a wide-spread, multi-disciplinary community.
This community now consists of students, scientists and researchers,
large corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and

The internet is an immensely complex combination of thousands of
technologies and dozens of services used by millions of people around
the world each day figure 1.1 shows a web of computers which is laid
around the globe. The internet links thousands of computer networks.
Every network and every computer in these networks exchange
information according to certain rules called protocols. These different
computers and networks are united with common thread of two
protocols, i.e., internet protocol (IP) and transmission control protocol
(TCP).
