Assume that all data are normally distributed and its variance are the same. Run the following data
using SPSS, then answer the following questions. (Attach your SPSS results)
1. A study was conducted to see whether the foot width of the feet of girls differ from that of
boys.
Random samples of 19 girls and 20 boys from the fourth grade were taken. The foot width of
each students was taken and are given below:
Girl Boy
8.8 8.4
9.3 8.8
9.3 9.7
7.9 9.8
8.7 8.9
8.8 9.7
9 9.6
9.5 8.8
8.3 9.8
9 8.9
8.1 9.1
9.5 9.8
9.3 9.2
8.6 8.6
8.6 9.4
8.5 9.5
9 8.9
7.9 9.3
8.8 9
8.6
At the 5% significant level, test whether the foot width of boys is wider than that of the girls in
fourth grade.
a. Write your hypothesis:
Let μx – mean foot of the boys
μy – mean foot of the girls
Ho: μx - μy = 0
Ha: μx - μy > 0
3. An instructor of the University studied the difference in foot width among grade 4 students.
At the same time, she took into account the favoured hand of those students. Below id the cross
tabulation of the student’s gender and favoured hand. Test at 5% if there is a relation between the
gender of the student and the students favoured hand.
Gender Favoured Hand
Right Left
Male 15 5
Female 16 3
4. A Company advertises that its detergent will remove all stains oil-base paint, in any
kind of water. Consumer’s action is evaluating this clam. Batches of washings were run in 5
randomly chosen homes having a particular type of water-hard, moderate and soft. Each bath
contains an assortment of rags and cloth scraps stained with food products, grease, and dirt
over a 150 square inch area. After washing the number of square inches that were still stained
was determined and the following results were obtained.
Observation Type of Water
Hard Moderate Soft
1 6 5 5
2 4 6 0
3 3 9 2
4 9 4 4
5 7 3 3
At 5% level, should consumer action conclude that the type of water affects the effectiveness of
the detergent?
a. Write your hypothesis:
Ho: μx = μy = μz
Ha: There is at least one or more inequality/ies from the three groups of water that
affects the effectiveness of the product.
5. Subject are tested for reactions times with their left and right hands. (only right
handed were used). The results (in thousandths of a seconds) are given in the accompanying
table. Used 0.05 significance level to test the claim that there is a difference between the mean
of the right- and left-hand reaction times. If an engineer is designing a fighter jet cockpit and
must located the ejection seat activator to be accessible to either the right or the left hand, does
it make a difference which hand she chooses?
