Impact of Drug War on Urban Poor

The war on drugs in the Philippines from 2016-2018 led to the deaths of over 400 people, mostly urban poor males. Tables I and II show the number of deaths increased each year from 2016-2018, peaking from January-February each year. Duterte and other officials have been accused of instigating these killings as part of a campaign that may constitute crimes against humanity. The data demonstrates large-scale extrajudicial violence has been used as a crime solution by the government.

Duterte and other senior officials have instigated and incited the killings in a campaign that could amount
to crimes against humanity.

GENDER 2016 2017 2018 TOTAL

MALE 158 105 55 318

FEMALE 67 32 23 122

Table I shows the number of deaths during the war on drugs in the Philippines every 2 months from
2016 to 2018. It shows that in the year 2016 that the total number of deaths were 225. November to
December has the lowest number of deaths with 10 deaths, while the highest number of death were
January to February with 71 deaths. In the year 2017 the total number of deaths were 172, November
to December still the lowest number of deaths with 12 deaths and January to February still the highest
number of deaths with 35 deaths. Lastly, in 2018 the total number of deaths were 78. Still November to
December has the lowest number of deaths with 5 deaths and January to February still the highest
number of deaths with 19 deaths. There is a pattern where November to December is the lowest and
January to February is the highest number of deaths from 2016 to 2018. It also show that 2016 is the
year with the highest number of deaths in the implementation of war on drugs.
Table II shows the number of male and female who died during the war on drugs from 2016 to
2018. It shows that more males die during the war on drugs with the total of 318 deaths compared to
the females with the total of 122 deaths from 2016 to 2018.
I can conclude from the table above that Large-scale extrajudicial violence as a crime solution for
the government. Each 2 months from 2016 to 2018 November to December is the lowest number of
people who have been killed and the highest number of people who have been killed are January to
February. The males has the higher number deaths and constantly killed every month from 2016 to
2018. This is a problem that Philippines is experiencing now.
Therefore, I can recommend to those who use illegal drugs that they should stop using and selling
because drugs can have a negative impact in our health and also they should undergo free rehabilitation
with the government to prevent lost of lives in our country.
