Temperature Measurement Project Guide

This document outlines the guidelines for a course project on temperature measurement and data acquisition. Students will work in groups of up to 5 students. The project involves using different temperature sensors to measure environmental temperature changes, digitizing the sensor output with a data acquisition card, and visualizing the sampled data in LabView. Design of experiments methods like Taguchi and signal-to-noise ratio analysis will be applied to optimize the measurement process and identify significant parameters. The project consists of 3 deliverables: 1) proposing a measurement tool design; 2) conducting experiments and analyzing results; and 3) presenting individual contributions to the project. Academic integrity policies are also reviewed.

Project Title: Temperature Measurement and Data Acquisition Using Design

of Experiment and Lab View.

I. INTRODUCTION

Measuring temperature is always interesting for engineers and scientists, as it is required in many
applications such as heat testing chamber for electronics, internal combustion engines, equipment
used for chemical processing in oil and gas industries and so on. Temperature measurement can
be performed through different available sensors such as RTDs, thermocouples, and thermistors
[1] and [2]. In this project you have different temperature sensors to detect temperature change in
environment. The produced voltage in this sensor will be digitalized by using a Data Acquisition
(DAQ) card and transferred to a computer. Finally, a Lab-View virtual environment (VI) will be
designed to visualize sampled data. Also Design of experiment (DOE) and related tools such as
Taguchi and Signal to noise ratio are applied to reduce the errors and uncertainty through the
measurement process [3], [4] and [5]. Finally, from selected parameters, significant parameters
and their optimal levels will be identified including their percentage of contribution to optimize the
measurement process.

The project should be done collectively by the group, but the contributions from each group
member should be clearly identified. Each group member must have primary responsibility and
contribution for a major part of the project, and should write the corresponding sections on each of
the reports.
Number of students in each group should not be more than 5 students.

. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course the students will be able to:
a) An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of
engineering, science, and mathematics (1)
b) An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a
collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives (5).
c) An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use
engineering judgment to draw conclusions (6)
d) An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies (7).

III. PROJECT FILES

 Files associated with the project are posted on Moodle.

IV. DELIVERABLES & PROJECT M ANAGEMENT

1. Deliverable 1: 4% (Week 10) the proposed measuring tool design and purchasing all
the required components for the project. You will need to submit one document (Word or pdf
file on Moodle) that has the following:
 What problem are you trying to solve?
 Flowchart fully describing the design solution (Full description of your developed test
plan).
 Types of existing temperature sensors and their applications.
 Data sheet and specifications of the temperature sensor you are going to use in your
experiment.
 List of selected parameters and their levels (4 parameters and 3 levels each) which affect
the measuring process.
 Summary about the DAQ card and Lab-View are used to collect data.

2. Deliverable 2: 10% (Week 14) Generate the following:
 Conduct your measurement for at least 9 experiments based on selected Orthogonal
array of Taguchi and Lab-View.
 Determine the significant and insignificant parameters and their optimal level using Signal
to Noise Ratio Analysis.
 Determine the percentage of contribution of the selected parameters using ANOVA and
conclude the results.

3. Deliverable 3: 7% (Week 15) Generate the following:

 Each group is required to present their work in a one-on-one presentation, where each
student will be asked to explain their contribution in the project and will be asked about all
parts of the project. An individual grade will be given accordingly.

V. PLAGIARISM

 Upon suspicion and doubt of the authenticity of the work submitted, the Instructor has
the right to ask the student to verify her/his work. This can be done through, but not limited
to, oral examination or discussion, or any other action deemed necessary. If the student
fails to prove the authenticity of the work, then the Instructor will apply the academic
misconduct rules as mentioned in the AUM Student Handbook which may include
awarding the work a zero grade.
 You will also be held responsible if someone else copies your work - unless you can
demonstrate that you have taken reasonable precautions against copying.
 For a detailed description of academic misconduct please refer to the undergraduate
AUM student Handbook.
