In compression ignition (CI) engines, which operate on the Diesel cycle, during the
compression stroke, only the air trapped in the combustion chamber is compressed instead
of an air-fuel mixture in the case of a gasoline engine ( excluding GDI ).
The diesel is injected into the high pressure combustion chamber as the cylinder reaches
TDC and continues after it for a finite duration of time, at theoretically constant pressure (
this is why Diesel cycle is also called a constant pressure cycle ).
In this duration, the piston starts moving from the TDC to BDC and this obviously causes a
change in volume.

Cut-off ratio is defined as the ratio of combustion chamber volume at the end of fuel
injection/combustion and the combustion chamber volume at the beginning of fuel
injection/combustion.

Cut off ratio in diesel engine is the ratio of volume after combustion to before combustion Or
ratio of expansion volume to the clearance volume.
So, thereotically in the aboveP-V diagram of diesel cycle ,cut off can be said as ratio of V3 to
V2 (V = volume ). i.e,
Cutoff ratio =V3/V2.
Thank you and feel free to point out my any mistakes.
