Stroop Test

The document describes the Stroop test, which measures processing speed and cognitive flexibility. The test involves saying the color of the ink that words are printed in, not reading the color words themselves. It becomes difficult as part of the brain wants to read the words automatically while trying to name the colors. Taking longer on the test indicates being a fluent reader due to the automatic word reading response interfering with color naming.

Test

Say the name of each color below. Say the colors as quickly as you can.



Now read the color words. Read the words as quickly as you can.

red, blue, green, yellow, blue

red, blue, yellow, green, blue
Now, take the Stroop test! Say the colors you see, not the colors you read.

red, blue, green, yellow, blue

yellow, blue, red, green, blue
red, blue, yellow, green, blue
If you found that last section to be tricky, you're not alone! Part of your brain is trying to read
the words. The other part is trying to say the colors.

If you have trouble with the Stroop Test, it probably means you are a fluent reader. If you ask
a young child who does not know how to read to take this test, they will probably be able to
say the colors names much more quickly.
