6 1-Notes PDF

The document provides definitions and examples of trigonometric identities including reciprocal identities, quotient identities, Pythagorean identities, cofunction identities, and odd-even identities. Students are asked to use these identities to simplify trigonometric expressions and prove additional identities. Examples are provided to demonstrate simplifying expressions using basic identities.

1 Verifying Identities Name: ___________________

Objectives: Students will be able to use fundamental identities to simplify

trigonometric expressions prove identities.

Reciprocal Identities:
sinθ = 1 cscθ = 1
cscθ sinθ

cosθ = 1 secθ = 1
secθ cosθ

tanθ 1 cotθ = 1
cotθ tanθ

Quotient Identities
tanθ = sinθ
cosθ

cotθ = cosθ
sinθ

Pythagorean Identities:

sin2θ + cos2θ = 1

The other two Pythagorean Identities can be easily derived from

the one above.

-Divide the above equation by cos2θ:

-Divide the above equation by sin2θ:

Cofunction Identities

sin(π/2 - θ) = cosθ cos(π/2 - θ) = sinθ

tan(π/2 - θ) = cotθ cot(π/2 - θ) = tanθ

sec(π/2 - θ) = cscθ csc(π/2 - θ) = secθ

Odd-Even Identities

sin(-θ) = -sinθ csc(-θ) = -cscθ

cos(-θ) = cos(θ) sec(-θ) = sec(θ)

tan(-θ) = -tanθ cot(-θ) = -cotθ

Examples Use basic identities to simplify the expressions.

1.) sec(-x)cos(-x)

2.) cotβsinβ

3.) 1 - cos2θ

sinθ

4.) sin3x + sinxcos2x

5.) (secx - 1)(secx + 1)

sin2x

Nov 254:05 PM

6.) cosx - sinx

1 - sinx cosx

To do proofs:
Start on the LHS and show it equals the RHS. (Or vice versa!)

It's usually a good idea to start with the side that looks more

complicated.

Let's start with something that's not trig.

Prove the following identity.

x2 - 1 - x2 - 1 = 2

x-1 x+1

Dec 11:26 PM

Prove the following trigonometric identities.

1.) sinx(cotx + cosxtanx) = cosx + sin2x

2.) 1 + tanβ = secβcscβ

tanβ

Dec 11:37 PM

3.) secx + 1 = sinx

tanx 1 - cosx

4.) tan2θ - sin2θ = tan2θsin2θ

Dec 11:46 PM

5.) sinx = cosx

1 + tanx 1 + cotx
