Separation Techniques Worksheet

This document contains a worksheet on separation techniques with questions about various methods like filtration, distillation, chromatography, and crystallization. It provides examples of when different techniques can be used to separate mixtures and identifies key parts of a simple distillation setup. The questions are aimed at testing understanding of the fundamental concepts and proper applications of separation methods.

True/False Questions

1. Think carefully about the following statements. Are they true or false?
Write/type your answer in the box
a. false
a. In filtration, the filtrate is always a pure liquid.
b. Drinking water can only be obtained from seawater by distillation. b. false
c. The fractional distillation of miscible liquids is only possible if the liquids c. false
have different boiling points.
d. Paper chromatography is a physical method for separating mixtures. d. true
e. Mixtures have fixed melting and boiling points. e. true

2. Name the techniques which are suitable for separating the following mixture:

Situation Separation Technique

a. To obtain drinking water from muddy water Distillation
b. To separate petrol from crude oil Decanting
c. To remove leaves from a swimming pool Filtration
d. To obtain pure sugar from a solution Crystallization
e. To determine whether the coloring in a fruit juice is a Chromatography
single substance or a mixture of colored substance

3. You are asked to separate sand and sodium chloride. Name the methods needed to carry out the
procedure. Explain how you would carry out the procedure to obtain pure sand and sodium chloride
back.
Filtration and distillation; add water to the solution. Heat the mixture to dissolve the sodium
chloride (salt). Filter the salt and the water. Boil the salty water (distillation) until all the water
evaporates and obtaining the salt.

4. The following diagram shows a setup of simple distillation.

Cold water out

Cold water in

(a) (i) Identify substance P.

Anti-bumping granules or a boiling chip

(ii) What is the objective of substance P?

They are added to liquids to make them boil more calmly.

(b) Identify the distillate collected in the receiver.

Pure water

(c) Suggest how you would determine that the distillate collected is a pure substance.
The purity of the substance can be measured by the boiling point of the liquid. If it is pure
than it should boil at 100 degrees Celsius, otherwise it can be determined as not pure.

(d) Label the water in and water out on the diagram.

(e) State one possible mistake in the set up and explain the significance of the mistake.
