NSCP

The NSCP code adopted many but not all provisions from UBC-97 regarding earthquake engineering. Specifically, it did not fully adopt parameters outlined in topics 5.03.1 through 5.03.18 of UBC-97 which provide guidance on response history analysis, response spectrum analysis, and equivalent lateral force analysis. Observation of real buildings in past earthquakes has greatly influenced the development of building codes, with newer buildings generally performing well but older buildings still posing hazards.

1. What are the provisions in UBC-97 that NSCP did not fully adopt? Evaluate the contents of
NSCP code following the stipulations of parameters based on Topic 5.03 hierarchy from 5.03.1
to 5.03.18.

The National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) has been the guidance
to civil and structural engineers for design and evaluation of buildings, roads, houses,
etc. There was an update that started around 2007 or 2008 about discussing on
adopting the new international building code which has since replaced the UBS in USA.
But due to unmet requirements the code update discussion was directed to readopting
the UBC 1997 particularly for the ELPS.
