Understanding the Negative Double in Bridge

1. A negative double is used to show values and length in the unbid suits, particularly the unbid major suits, after an opponent has opened the bidding or overcalled. 2. The minimum strength required for a negative double depends on the level it forces the partner to bid. A double that forces a one-level bid requires 6 points, while a double that forces higher bids such as to two or three levels requires 8-10 points. 3. A negative double provides the opening bidder useful information about the doubler's suit length and strength so they can choose an appropriate rebid. It allows problem hands to be handled when a direct overcall is not possible due to strength limitations.
