STUDIO THINKING
THE REAL BENEFITS OF VISUAL ARTS EDUCATION
Hi good day everyone! We are the group 5 and we’ll be discussing about the
STUDIO THINKING the real benefits of visual Arts education by HETLAND et al
(2007) foreword by David N. Perkins published by the Teachers College Press,
Amsterdam, New York City
- So the flow of our discussion will be the introduction, framework of the studio
thinking, studi structures and the 8 studi habits.
- So based on the reference, the art education has always been in tenuous
position in the US. Even naman dito sa ating country, less support and hindi
talaga masyado pinapriority ang arts related.
- Ang ganung pagtingin sa arts ay mas lumala because of the NO CHILD LEFT
BEHIND legislation that was passed on the US in 2001. to improve school
performance by setting standards of accountability. All public schools
receiving federal funding should administer a nationwide standardized test
annually to all students.
- Paghindi masyadong mataas at okay ang results, ang school ay may
accountability dito. Kailangan nilang gumawa ng improvemet plan for the
subjects, tapos damay damay na yun pwedeng magtanggal o replacement of
school staff, gumawa ng new curriculum, and even yung page extend of
more time sa mga subjects. And worst is yung If required improvements are
not made, the schools face decreased funding and pwedeng iturn over sa
private company.
- And because of that nagkaroon ng less support sa arts related subjects and
mas nagfocus sila sa literacy and nuemeracy subjects.
Because No Child Left Behind emphasizes accountability in literacy and numeracy
and not the arts, even though the arts are included in the Act as a mandated arts
advocates have tried to make the case that the arts are important because they
improve students' performance in traditional academic subjects that "really count,"
If we ask someone what students learn in art classes, we are likely to hear that
they learn how to paint, or draw etc. That's true, but it only tells us what they do,
not how they learn to think. Ofcourse students learn artistic craft in arts classes.
But we must ask what else they learn. Does experience in the arts change students'
minds so that they can approach the world? Tulad ng pinagawa satin ni mr laya
nung 2nd year, Students must be given the opportunity to think like artists. The
arts are another way of knowing the world—as important as the other disciplines to
our societal health.
So guided by the past studies, they set out to discover what excellent visual art
teachers teach, how they teach, and what students learn in their classes.
dito na nila nadevelop ang framework of studio thinking
And this framework describes two aspects of the art classroom. (1) How these
classrooms are structured, and here we describe three studio structures, and (2)
what is taught in these classrooms, and here we describe eight studio habits of
mind.
