IMPACT OF MEMES TO THE STUDENTS OF BATAC JUNIOR COLLEGE
I.
INTRODUCTION
Memes are photos to share and reblog, repost or retweet, especially among students. It’s not
always clear why we post, or create memes. Sometimes, we might think that the memes are
funny, or we can relate to the person behind the photo. The problem is, students didn’t always
think about the person behind the photo. Memes crop out the story behind them. It’s important to
make students aware of what memes really mean. After all, so many are being shared to social
media. There can be many different versions of the same meme, and even some that Photoshop
the person in bizzare situation. Memes are displayed in areas in the internet that the students can
easily gain access to. Images of messages with the pictures become engrained into a developing a
child’s mind. The viral tool will be vey hard to control as times moves on due to the popularity.
Memes are getiing too far out of hand for the students to the point in which cartoons and
character of children movies are used in negative ways. Still, what’s funny to one person could
be offensive to another. Students should know the limitation of what they are sharing and posting
in social media. Every memes has multiple version of itself that can be more cruel than funny.
Because of this, it’s crucial to the students to think of the message behind the meme. Internet

FOREIGN STUDY
The story of memes is crucial to the understanding of the digital culture, and not only as
characteristics of an internet subsculture, but as a cultural artifact that is gaining new
meaning and function as it is breaking more and more into the mainstream. Borzsei (2013)
states that the technological, sociological and cultural reason for the emergence of internet
meme culture was so prevalent today. His research focused on remixed Internet Memes that
is collaborative, absurdist humor in multimedia forms.
The term “meme” with the emergence of the Internet was also applied to content that
spread from user to user online. Shortly, memes was consisting of inside funny jokes. In fact,
memes were generated to show the cultural counter part of the genes. Its primary meaning
was supposed to signify “a unit of cultural transmission or a unit of
imitation.”(Dawkins,1976) Internet meme is a piece of culture, typically a joke, which gains
influence through online transmission- considered as the first definition of Internet meme
was proposed by Patrick Davidson (2009). According to brodie (1996), he claimes that
“memetics has uncovered the existence of viruses of the mind”, which are infectious piece of
our culture that spread rapidly throughout the population, altering people’s thoughts and
lives,” one of the earliest internet memes was the emoticon (Davidson). Smiley quickly
spread to other communities and it soon became a meme. The “sideways smiley face”
composed entirely of punctuation marks was created on 19 September 1982 by Scott E.
Fahman. Emoticons display many definite characteristics of Internet memes in a very
minimalistics form. Thus, these emotions became a vehicle in communicating certain ideas
Next to the emoticons is experimentation with technology was the website Ben is Evil.
which host images that can be considered examples of the modern remixed interet meme. It
was created by Dino Ignacio 1997, he is a Filipino artist and designer. Due to the
Photoshop’s accessibility (as a creative tool) is resulted in increasing number of private
images appearing online, right at the meme community’s disposal.
