Empiricism vs. Rationalism Essay

This document contains questions and answers about empiricism and rationalism. The student identifies as an empiricist because they believe experiences, good or bad, mold them into a better person and that experiences are unique to each individual. When studying, they apply both rationalism and empiricism - using logic and reasoning from lessons but also implementing findings into real-life. Overall, the student agrees more with rationalism and its ability to transform society through systematic scientific methods and logical reasoning. This allows problems to be solved, theories to be proven, knowledge to be developed, and better decisions to be made, especially during times of crisis.

Instructions: Answer the succeeding questions based on the discerning points

between Empiricism and Rationalism.
Rationalism
 The primary and most superior source of knowledge about reality is reason.
 Sense experience is an unreliable and inadequate route to knowledge.
 Conclusions are derived through logic and reasoning
Empiricism
 The only source of genuine knowledge about the world is sense experience.
 Reason is an unreliable and inadequate route to knowledge unless it is
grounded in the solid bedrock of sense of experience.
 There is no such thing as innate knowledge is derived from experience.

Question 1:
To which school of thought do you identify yourself with, as an empiricist or as a
rationalist. Explain your answer in 5 sentences.
Answer:
I am an empiricist because I have this mantra that no one really prepares us
for life, we are learning on what we perceived from the others. Sure, we can be
taught a great deal of things, but the things that matter in life, the things that will
make or break us as a person, can only be learned through experience. Our
experiences are unique to each other and this means that knowing about something
and living through it are two entirely different things. All experiences, good or bad,
mold me into a better version of myself. I believe that we truly can only grow from
what we go through on our own.
Question 2. How do you apply empiricism and/or rationalism in studying your
lessons?
Answer:
Flowers don’t just start out in full bloom; they take the rain and the sun and turn
them into something beautiful. The same will be said when I am learning or studying my
lessons. We can be rationalist and empiricist when learning. Flowers symbolizes
reasoning or logic being taught in our curriculum but we need to fail, rise up and bloom
when applying the lessons we have learned in school. We should always rationalize, learn
about presented researches, studies and theories because this is the way to enhance the
society by advancing knowledge through the development of scientific theories, concepts
and ideas. I knew for a fact that the lessons I have in front 7of me needs application in
real life therefore this is the time where I can apply empiricism. The most difficult parts
of life, the frightening truths, are the experiences that teach us something.
Rationalism is met through forming hypotheses, collecting data, analyzing results,
forming conclusions. On the other hand, empiricism is implementing these findings into
real-life applications and forming new research questions thus leads to the cycle of
consecutive learning.

Question 3. To which Philosophical viewpoint do you agree? Explain your answer

in not less than 5 sentences.
Answer:
Even though that I represent empiricism a lot, I firmly stand with rationalism and
its capability to transform the society in a form of logic and reasoning. The world is faced
by a pandemic of a disease which we don’t know how to stop and barely know how to
treat and applying systematic and constructed scientific methods to obtain, analyze and
interpret data which provides us with the information and knowledge needed for problem
solving and making decisions during this trying times.
All that research means saving lives. Without it, millions more people will die of the
disease. Rationalism also helps us create an action plan from various knowledge we have
gained from correct and consistent beliefs. It helps us inform action, prove a theory, and
contribute to developing knowledge which will also help us shape a better world for the
next generation. In addition, rationalism also satisfies our curiosity. It keeps clever minds
busy and helps to give purpose. It broadens our knowledge base both individually and
collectively which in turn hopefully leads on to new ideas and ways of doing things.
Lastly, rationalize decision facilitates connections and fosters social cohesion and
harmony.
