about a new high-tech running shoe.
Running is one of the most popular physical fitness
activities In the world, It can help individuals burn fat,
reduce stress, lessen diabetes risk, and strengthen their
cardiovascular systems. But running can also cause
Injuries, such as tearing a ligament, twisting an ankle, or
even breaking a bone. Now, researchers from the Dresden
Polytechnic Institute (OPI) are developing a high-tech
running shoe that they believe will help runners maximize
performance while preventing these kinds of injuries.
‘The DPI shoe comes equipped with special sensors and
microelectronics that can measure runners’ biomechanical
data and evaluate their performance in real time. Equipped
with a microcontroller, accelerometers, GPS sensors, and RF
modules that transmit radio waves, the shoe takes athletic
monitoring to a whole new level. Whereas traditional
monitoring devices, such as pulse-rate watches and chest
straps, can only record vital signs like breathing and heart
rate, the shoe can also note such problems as incorrect
foot placement, asymmetric load balancing, exhaustion or
muscular overload
The shoe uses radio signals to communicate with the
runners’ smartphone. It can suggest to the runner that they
slow down, change their form, find a different surface, or
even stop completely to avoid injury. Information can also
be relayed to a website for further evaluation, helping
runners adjust their training routines and maximize thelr
performance goals. The entire system can be easily installed
and removed from the soles of the shoes, and the shoes are
easily recharged by hooking them up to a charger.
A prototype of the running shoe has already been tested,
and researchers are presently working on shrinking the size
of the shoe's microelectronics and sensors. This represents
a considerable challenge, given that the shoe also needs to
be lightweight, waterproof, and durable.

This passage is about a consumer attitudes survey.
The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index
%2 survey of consumer confidence published on the
‘eond Friday of each month. Produced since 1946, it is
the oldest of all consumer attitude surveys currently in use
znd considered by many economists to be one of the best
pesictors of American household spending
The Index is designed to assess near-time consumer
atitudes on personal finance, shopping, and the overall
lusiness climate. Surveys are taken on weekends, with a
inal of 500 respondents. People are asked to respond to
8 questions about their current and expected personal
finances, and anticipated purchases for the next year
They are also asked their opinions of the US economy:
‘apectations for inflation, interest rates, and the labor
market over the next year and the next five years.
The rationale behind the survey is the widespread
Belefamong economists that, while itis dificult to predict
{ensumer behavior with any precision, consumers have an
fcellent track record of predicting economic downturns.
Tiss possibly because people are acutely sensitivetolosing
thei purchasing power, Over the years, the Sentiment index
Fescarried a 70% correlation with household expenditures
iver the next six months to a year, especially in regard to
figticket items such as automobiles and homes.
‘As a result, many banks, brokerage firms, and retailers
sibscribe to the Sentiment Index, and its results are covered
and analyzed by the financial press. The Index also affects
fieders and investors. Bonds traders worry about consumer
{onfidence because it can translate into demand for loans,
Which affects interest rates. Equity investors prefer to see
tonsumers upbeat because they then are more likely to
spend on goods and services, which can increase corporate
fevenues, profits, and stock values. And currency traders
Tealze that so long as the US economy is growing, demand
{orthe dollar will ikely be strong.

Guy Davenport wasa multi-faceted and prolificAmerican
writer, painter, and intellectual. From the 1960s till his
death in 2005, Davenport published nearly 50 books of
fiction, essays, and poetry, as well as hundreds of magazine
articles and reviews. He translated works into English from
ancient Aramaic, classical Greek, 19th-century French, and
2oth-century Italian. He was also an accomplished visual
attist whose paintings and drawings were exhibited in
galleries worldwide. He was as close to a Renaissance man
as the last century has produced: a modern American Da
Vinci.
Born in South Carolina and ensconced in a small
Kentucky town for his last 40 years, Davenport spent his
entire life in the American South (with the exception of two
years in England), but his interests spanned all continents
and generations. His eclectic output included ruminations
on African art, Roman medicine, medieval poetry, urban
design, and the invention of the dictionary. Most striking
‘was his ability to connect seemingly disparate sources, such
as bringing ancient Egyptian geometry into an essay on the
steam engine, Perhaps it was this intimidating breadth of
knowledge that kept him from having more readers during
his lifetime,
(One of the constants in Davenport's writing was a
painter's power of observation. This allowed him to note
odd details that escaped other writers, such as the fact
that in thousands of paintings the artist Balthus never once
painted a clock. He was also a master of writing sentences
that seemed commonsensical until thought about more
deeply, as when he wrote, "Making things is so human that
psychology and philosophy have gotten nowhere in trying
to account for it" Perhaps the main idea underscoring
Davenport's work is the idea that the past ~ from the cave
paintings of Lascaux to the 18th-century Shakers - has
relevance, and that what is most important to humanity
is only revealed when we consider the present against the
broad backdrop of what came before

US government scientists drilling into an oceanic crater
Ine discovered the oldest body of seawater ever found.
Pe water, believed to be between 100 and 150 milion
Hts ps old, was found one kilometer beneath Virginia's
{hesapeake Bay. It was trapped when a large asteroid or
{hunk of ice slammed into the mouth of the bay, effectively
sealing it underground for millions of years. The discovery
‘hat PYPTOVide insights into how the ocean evolved and how
iiscurrently changing,
Chemical analysis helped scientists determine the
wate’s origin. By measuring the ratio of chloride and
biomide, they were able to establish that it was, in fact,
seawater; by measuring the concentration of helium, they
were able to determine its age. The concentration of helium
85 was approximately 100 times higher than that of other
rearby samples. By calculating the helium accumulation
ite, the scientists were able to determine that the water
‘os rom the Early Cretaceous Period, more than 100 million
yearsago.
The find appears to clear up a long-standing mystery
regarding the heightened salinity of previously collected
youndwater samples from the same region of Chesapeake
fay. Until now, various theories had been proposed. Some
soggested that buried salt had slowly dissolved in the water;
tthers suggested that the heat of an asteroid impact had
boiled the water, leaving it saltier than before. The discovery
‘stablishes that the water had been that way for millions of
years, and did not become more salinated over time.
The discovery may provide insight into the origins of
cean life, by demonstrating the exact conditions in which it
evolved. More critically, understanding the ocean's chemical
composition in the past may help to solve the problem
of oceanic acidification. Steadily rising levels of carbonic
axid in recent years have placed many animal species at
tisk, Researchers are just beginning to study its effects on
marine ecosystems, and a sample of Cretaceous-era water
may provide a useful benchmark for further examination,
