24- October 3) under the guidance of Mr. Hailemariam (Academic advisor) and Mr. Fassikaw
Worku (director of DTU network administer).

Executive Summary
The main goal of internship program is to integrate the theoretical concept acquired with tangible
practical demonstration.
Regarding to this, the report is about my internship that I have undergone at DTU for about two
months. I actively participated in the work by applying the knowledge I obtained during my
education such as the important aspects of networking including computer network organization
and other courses.

Through this internship and practical work, I am able to learn the techniques relevant to my
professions as well as the practical management skills from physical work.

Chapter One

1. Historical background of DTU

Debretabor university or Gafat, DTU public


higher education institute in Ethiopia was
established in 2008. Their excellence’s Addisu
Legesse and Demeke Mekonen laid the
foundation stone on the eastern part of the town
about 4Kms away from the center on 126
hectares of land. DTU started its teaching
learning process by borrowing classrooms and
dormitories from Worta Collage of Agriculture
and by centering at teaching learning,
community services and doing cutting edge
researches. After one year being in worta it
continuous its teaching learning process at
Debretabor on its main campus.

DTU is one of the 5 best universities in the


country. DTU ranks in the national rating of
Ethiopia, this impressive result was achieved in
less than 15 years.

DTU began its mission with 2 presidents


(president and academic vice president), one
long base vehicle and birr 532,000.00 budget.

On July, 20/2011 (23/11/2003 E.C), the board
of the university was organized and started to
give direction based on proclamation No
650/2001.

History of data center in DTU in 2005 E.C the datacenter starts its work with in one service
only provides broadband ethernet but not wireless. The director of ICT Directorate bought
100Mega bit but it increases gradually and now it is 1Giga bit.
After one year (2005E.C) the datacenter provides both broadband ethernet and wireless
(WIFI) with 80 wireless routers.

They are working new datacenter and started in 2013 but it is in progress.

1.1 Vision
DTU tries hard to became one of the top universities in the country in quality
education in 2020.

1.2 Mission
The past years achievement of DTU show that the institute is moving promptly
towards its mission. The following statements prevails DTU’s primary goal.
DTU inspires to generate self – reliant produce highly qualified and efficient man power,
competent, problem solving, research oriented, innovative transformation agents who can
actively participate in the teaching-learning, research doing community services that basically
enhance the technological advancement of the society as a whole.

1.3 Values
To achieve the intended goal, the organization determines attainable values which can bring:
 A distinctive core beliefs and guiding principles
 Changing the staff’s attitudes and behaviors positively.
The major values of DTU are as follow.

1.4 Service and products of DTU


DTU have a great contribution to the city and to the country in different
areas. The DTU provides different kinds of services for the sectors of
different areas.
The main services are: -
 Train competent and responsive professional who
address applying community based education (CBD) in
collage of health sciences and faculty of agricultural and
environmental sciences student practiced.
 To contribute to social development through training of
responsive profession.
 Strengthen partnerships and linkage with local/
international institute for purpose of rendering high
quality training, applied research and services.
 Solving multidimensional problems by Guna Tana
integrated field research and development center.

1.5 Main customers or end users of DTU’s product and services


The main customers or end-users of DTU are peoples those are living with in Debretabor town,
people who lives around Debretabor as well as the peoples of Ethiopia and the communities of
the University itself. This company has been established for many purposes, like to create job
opportunity for many educated citizens, to increase the number of educated persons in the
country etc.

1.6 Structural Organization of DTU


The organizational structure of DTU refers to the hierarchy through which
delegation of responsibilities is accomplished. This gives employees and students
a sense of who answers to whom, and who to address should a problem arise

2. Over all internship experience


2.1 Objective of the Internship
2.1.1 General objective
The general objective of internship is to provide student operational environments which
formulate and focus on their career objectives. It also to connects students with potential
employers and provides opportunities to explore the variety of career objectives that are often
available within in the hosting company. Such opportunities also help students relate theories
and knowledge acquired in the academic year with the skills and attitudes found in the
company and develop idea appreciate businesses area and provide experience that many
employers value.
2.1.2 Specific objective
Specific objective of the internship is to acquire and demonstrate competencies expected in a
professional managerial environment such as:

 Apply and generalized the academic theory & knowledge acquired in the
class room to practical engineering field.

 To familiarized the student with consumers, client, company’s activity,
scope of service in the company.
 To create interrelation and interdependence to the internship company.
 Create conducive atmosphere to assess professional qualification.
 Means to transfer a knowledge and technology to the industry.
 Increase productivity of the student.
 Support the government directions to the ongoing industrial lead growth
and transformation (GTP).
 Student get opportunity to see the real problem of industry and when back
to university they can find a solution.

2.2 how I get into the company


First Debremarkos institute of Technology give me the internship application request paper.
Then I tried to gather some information about how to identify our future internship hosting
company, which company is more interesting, related with my filed to improve my
theoretical knowledge and which has enough material which can support me to upgrade my
theoretical knowledge practically. And I selected DTU because the acting ICT directorate
director and network administrator told me they are installing data center.

After that, since I have internship letter of application from DMU, I gave the letter for
acceptance to the hosting company. By reading my letter of application they accepted me and
gave me the acceptance paper. Then, I submitted the acceptance paper to the university and I
joined the company. Finally, the acting ICT directorate director and network administrator gave
me a lot of rules and regulations, and introduced me with the technicians and other workers.

2.3 The work section I have working


The Organization has Many Sections as we tried to locate in the above in Fig 1.1, I have been
working in the information communication technology directorate at the datacenter.

2.3.1 Overall system components and operations


In section of information communication technology directorate, in the datacenter the
followings tasks or operations are performed.

Wall cladding
Wall cladding is the process of layering one material on top of another material which will
create a skin layer over the walls. Cladding systems can be fabricated with aluminum as the
main material.
Due to the characteristics of aluminum being durable, strong and light, it is an ideal material
for the construction material.
Aluminum can offer effective protection against fire.

Fore ceiling
Fore ceiling used for making ceiling.
Ceiling means the topmost part of the inside of a room, or the upper limit. Inside the ceiling
different cables that used for making the data center are exist. It does not burn with fire.

Raised floor

A raised floor in data center is an elevated floor that is built two inches to four feet above
concrete floor. It creates a space that can be used for cooling, electrical, and mechanical
services. In data center it also used as a way of distributing clod air.

Materials used for making raised floor are listed below.
1 Pedestal: part of the raised floor provides structural support for the raised floor. They are
commonly referred to stands, legs, jacks, or stanchions. It connects the floor base and the
head allowing enough space for any building materials that need to be installed beneath the
floor.

2 Stringer: are also essentials parts of in the raised floor construction as they aid in joining the
pedestals forming a framework for a strong floor panel.

3 Raised floor panel: forms the flat surface of the access floor. It is usually 60 cm by 60 cm in
size and it constructed using steel materials. Concrete materials are used to fill the panel
making it durable and flexible in case some improvements need to be done on the building
services installed in the panel.

Assemble of server rack


A rack is a metal frame chassis that holds, stacks, organizes, secures and protects various
computer network and server hardware devices. The rack in data center also called network
rack. The term “network” refers to the rack being used to house network hardware like
routers, switches, access points, and modems.

AC rack
An air condition rack is a self-contained unit so the air conditioner only has to cool the area
immediately around the server hardware instead of the entire room. It contains hot and cold
aisle containments.

Mounting network devices
Network devices are mounted from bottom to top server, VCN, LAN switch, UIM20a and
two ECC800.

Server is a hardware device that provide services to serve the needs of other components.

VCN stand for video cloud node. It integrates multiple video surveillance services in one
device; such as live video surveillance, video retrieval and playback, pan-tilt-zoom controls,
alarm detection and linkage, voice intercom, and electronic maps.

LAN switch is networking hardware that connects devices on a computer network by using
packet switching to receive and forward data to the destination device. A switch is a multiport
network bridge that uses MAC addresses to forward data at the data link layer of the OSI
model.

ECC800 is core component for the smart module local management. it supports access right
management in terms of the access card, password, and fingerprint, providing high
availability. It also supports sending of alarm notifications by short message, enabling remote
maintenance.

UIM20 is expansion module used to expand ECC800.

UPS
UPS stand for uninterruptible power supply. It is an electrical apparatus that provides
emergency power to load when the input power source or mains power fails.

ATS
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a self-acting, intelligent power switching device
governed by dedicated control logic upon failure of the connected power source, the ATS
will automatically transfer (switch) the load circuit to the power source (if it is available).

Batteries
We use 6-GFM-65/12V65ah model in VRLA battery. It is suitable to make a 12V, 24v, 48V
battery bank.

A valve regulated lead-acid battery, commonly known as a sealed lead- acid battery
characterized by a limited amount of electrolyte absorbed in plate separator.

FM 200
FM200 (heptafluoropropane) is a compound of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen
(CF3CHFCF3). It is colorless, odorless and electrically non-conductive.
It rapidly extinguishes most commonly found fire by a combination of chemical and physical
mechanisms without affecting the available oxygen. This allows personnel to see and breathe,
permitting them to leave the fire area safely.

The atmospheric lifetime of FM200 is between 31 and 42 years which along with its zero
ODP (ozone depleting potential) presents a long-term solution to fire protection requirements.

Ac actuator
Ac actuator is used in smart module to control the lightning inside the smart module by
receiving commands from the access control system or host. It also provides a charging port
for the pad. And can connect to ECC800 controller by wireless networking.

Access actuator
Access actuator is the control component for the aisle door in a smart module. It connects to
the ECC800 controller over FE port. It opens the magnetic lock by detecting the card swiping
information of the card reader, door open button information and fire linkage information. It
has access right management, access event record, and alarm record functions.
E light actuator
It has the function of associating alarms, access authorization status, and atmospheres.
E light power
The e light actuator gets its power from e light power.

Access control device


The aisle control system applied to contained aisles. It monitors and collects for devices and
personnel moving into and out of contained aisles. Diverse access control devices such as
fingerprint and card reader with a keypad, finger print and card reader, card reader with a
keypad are supported.

Smart ETH gateway


It allows the extension of the 53.5V DC power supply and FE communication for the
ECC800. And it can also work as ECC.

Multi-functional sensor
A multi-functional sensor integrates the temperature and humidity (T/H) sensor and smoke
sensor. The multi-functional sensor can connect to the ECC800 over FE or wireless
communication.
Smoke detector
smoke detectors are used to detect the smoke concentration.

Alarm beacon
When a fire occurs or smokes are generated in the micro- modular equipment room, the alarm
beacon generates an audible signal and flashes to inform operators of fire and security risks.

Temperature sensor

The temperature sensor is used for the surface temperature measure, industrial process
control, measurement instrument, etc.

Indoor AC
The indoor component of a split system air conditioner includes the vent in which cooled or
warmed air is expelled.
Outdoor AC
the outdoor component of a split system air conditioner contains the compressor. It is
responsible for heating or cooling the air. It connected to the indoor AC by a network of
pipes.

Vacuum sack
Vacuum sack used for testing if there is a hole or air in the pipes. If the indicator indicates
less than one that means there is hole or air in the pipes.

Flugene R410A
Flugene R410A is hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant, which does not deplete or damage
the ozone layer. It makes the compressor run cooler and prevent it from overheating.

2.3.2 major duties of the intern
I did the following major tasks.
 Adjusting the level of the raised floor
 Cutting frames, fore ceiling, aluminum, raised floor panels and etc.
 Drilling floor
 Cladding wall
 Measuring devices
 Mounting network devices
 Connecting devices
 Assisting the technicians
2.4 challenges faced and measures
While I was working in the datacenter, I face the following problems.
 The beam was hard to drill.
 It was hard to keep the level of wall cladding and the raised floor because the house
did not keep its level.
 The puntas were not work properly because of low temperature. It overheated easily.
Measurements I have taken in order to overcome the challenges were the following.
 By adjusting the level with level instrument
 By cooling the puntas and by changing them

3. Benefits gain from the internship

The main purpose of internship is to learn by working in practical environment and to apply
the knowledge acquired during the studies in a real-world scenario in order to take on the
problems using the knowledge and skill learned during the academic process. During my
internship program at Debre tabor university I had gained many advantages from the
internship.

3.1 according to theoretical knowledge and practical skill


This internship program helped me to apply the theoretical knowledge I learned in class to
practical one. I could also evaluate myself how much I can change the theoretical knowledge
to the practical one.
Some of the practical skills I gained from this internship program are:

 Identifying problems
 Finding the solution
 Mounting network devices

 Social interaction within others

 How to strength friendship with other in workplace

3.2 team playing skill
In a working place, the most important part is the team work. This internship program
thought me a lot about the benefits of team work. I have improved the following best team
playing behaviors:
 Listening: - I should demonstrate that I can listen to other people's ideas and points of
view by actively listening what others in the team have to offer and I can often build
on their ideas.
 Respecting: - treat all other team-members with equal respect and build up trust.
 Helping: - I used to assume as essential to help others in the team. Be alert of what
others are doing and suggest help and support if I can.
 Sharing: - am willing to share knowledge, experience, time and talents with others in
the team.
 Asking: - I ask questions so I am sure of the objectives of the team.
 Persuading: - I have to be prepared to come up with ideas and persuade them, but
eventually agree to change them if correct.

3.3 Intern personal skill

3.4 leadership skills


Leadership is the most important skill in work pace that I think. It is the most valuable skill
that I develop. I have noticed that leadership need many skills. During the time of internship
period I have improved the following leadership skill.

Chapter four

4. projects and contributions

4.1 Summery of the projects


When I was at the DTU practicing my internship, my mentor has told me to prepare a project.

The project is based on computer networking, but prepared with packet tracer. So, it is just a
network design with all the addressing and configuration. It will serve as a design for the
network installation and implementing of some building of DTU network. It has three main
VLAN parts. Those are faculty of technology, faculty of natural and computational science
and one computer lab. The faculty divided into different VLAN by using the name of each
department.

Faculty of technology divided into eight VLAN by using department name it contains.

Faculty of natural and computational science divided into five VLAN by using department it
contains.

In this project I am using VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network). VLAN is a local network
where computers, servers, and other network devices or end devices are logically separate at
layer two regardless of their physical location.

4.2 Scope of The Project
The project has a full network design with different network device like servers, router,
switches, connecters, end devices and access point. All the devices are connected and
configured properly.

I used packet tracer version 8.0 to design, configure, and simulate my project.

 Connecting router to router by cross over UTP cables.
 Connecting router to switch, switch to server by street through UPT cables.

I used static IP addressing in each VLAN the first usable address is the default gateway.

5. Conclusion and Recommendation


5.1 Conclusion
The internship was a useful experience. It has been an excellent experience. Working in
datacenter with technician was a dream come true. I get a lot of skills like team playing skill,
interpersonal skill and leader ship skill etc. Gaining experience, networking, professionalism,
confidence, facing the reality of how the outside world looks like in terms of professions are
also some of the benefits of internship.

I just gain the opportunity to face real problems and how to solve it. I have learnt not only
doing tasks what the field requires.

Generally, my two months internship program was quite a successful journey of skill,
knowledge and experience.

5.2 Recommendation
5.2.1 Recommendation for the company
 Serious supervision to the workers and students, DTU should increase and ensure
more supervision over the employees in order to work effectively.
 DTU should carry out job enlargement and enrichment to decrease joblessness in the
country.
 More opportunities to students to do intern in the campus.
 DTU should give dormitory to intern student because of student cannot afford rent
house.

5.2.2 Recommendation for the industrial linkage


 List company that manages intern student properly and that show the work to the
student properly.

5.2.3 Recommendation for the university


 The university should Secure internship placements. It helps students to secure
internship positions according to their respective programs.
 The university should give recommendations in order to ease students training periods
and also avoid the ache gotten by students in search of internship placements.
 The university should continue with internship program, because it helps to prepare
the students for their careers in future.
 Enable students to practice the theoretical knowledge obtained during class be
exercised practically.
