The document defines 7 modal scales: major/ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian/natural minor, and locrian. It provides the characteristic notes for each scale relative to the C major scale. The second part recommends using minor pentatonic or dorian scales over F- and D- chords, and Db mixolydian, Ab minor pentatonic, or Ab dorian over a Db7 chord for the song "Cantaloupe Island". It also suggests using a Db7 or Db7+4 (lydian dominant) scale for solos.
