Critique Paper

The critique paper analyzes two articles regarding the medium of instruction in the Philippine education system, focusing on Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) and the use of English and Filipino. The first article advocates for MTB-MLE, highlighting its benefits but lacking a discussion on its drawbacks, while the second article presents a more balanced view on using English and Filipino, supported by evidence. The critique emphasizes the importance of cultural identity through language while recognizing the need for adaptation in a changing world.

In Ashley Manabat’s 2016 article “DepEd implements mother tongue-based
learning to make lessons more interactive, easier for pupils,” the DepEd is stimulating
Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) as a feature of the Enhanced
Basic Education Program. However, Daphne Galvez, in her 2022 article “DepEd exec:
Use English, Filipino as kindergarten media of instruction” states that English and
Filipino should be used as media of instruction in schools as early as kindergarten,
according to the official announcement of Department of Education (DepEd) specifically
of undersecretary Epimaco Densing.
The first mentioned article which is about the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual
Education, presents reason on why should it be implemented on the curriculum of the
Early Childhood. The author cites that if the students use their native language as a
medium of instructions, then they will be able to grasp concept more effectively. She
also stated that according to DepEd “learners begin their education in the language they
understand best—their mother tongue—and need to develop a strong foundation in
their mother language before effectively learning additional languages”. Based on this
phrase, she neglected to include the disadvantages and the consequences of this
concept. She mentioned about MTB-MLE is used as a learning or subject area and as
medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Grade-3 which is quite useful for it would
help the audience prepared of the possible outcome. It is quite tricky that she mentioned
the purpose of the subject matter at the last part of her article for it should be more
organized if she put it after her main point. It’s a good thing though that she ended her
article with a quote from a DepEd chief of teaching but when it mentioned about
“researchers” with no proven evidence makes her statement questionable.
The second article that was mentioned above tackle about English and Filipino
as a medium of instruction that was proposed by the undersecretary of DepEd, Epimaco
Densing. The article started with a comparison which is a good start for an article
because it talks about a little bit of background that relates to the subject matter.
Although the first part is not that solid to give a bang to the audience since you cannot
predict what the author wants to share to the listener but the second part killed it. The
statement from the source of the subject matter made the whole article’s questions
answered. It discussed the reasons, the advantages as well as the disadvantages, the
consequences and as to why English and Filipino should be the medium of instruction
instead of the MTB-MLE. It is not biased but based on facts and statistical evidence. It
doesn’t discriminate the other concept but explained thoroughly as to why the new
curriculum should be implemented. It concerns about the situation and the result of our
country’s future endeavor.
We should not forget and put aside our first language for it helps develop our
cultural identity and improve deeper understanding of ourselves and our place within the
society. However, the Earth is not flat. Nothing is permanent. The world is constantly
changing and so is our way of living. We should succeed and leveled up with the other
country even if it means neglecting some of our beliefs.
