CHAPTER 5 HANGERS AND SUPPORTS CHAPTER 5 54 HANGING AND SUPPORTING SYSTEMS 5.4.1 Requirements. S40 Rigid round, rcetangular, and fat oval metal «ducts shail be installed with support systems indicated in Tables 5-1 to 5-3 and Figures 5-1 1 5-10. They shall be installed as required 10 maintain alignment, Horizontal ducts shall have a support within 2 (0.61 m) of each et bow and within 11(1.2 m) of each branch, terscetion. Upper attachments to structures shall have an allowable load not more than ‘one-fourth of the failure (proof test) load but are nol limited to the specifie methods shown here. 52 COMMENTARY ‘The duct hanging system is composed of three ole- ments, the upper attachment tothe building, the hang et itself, and the lower attachment to the duct ‘The manufacturer's load ratings and application data should be followed forall devices and materials $2.1 Gonerete Inserts Concrete inserts must be installed before the con- ‘rete is poured. They are used primarily where the sluet layout is simple and there is enough lead time to determine accurate placement. The simplest insert is piece of bent flat bar, Manufactured inserts are avail- able individually or in long lengths; the later are gen crally used where many hangers will be installed in or where individual inserts cannot be pre= cisely spotted atthe time of placing the concrete. 5.2.2 Concrete Fasteners Concrete fasteners are installed after the concrete has been poured and the forms have been removed, ‘heir application allows groater flexibility than con ereie inserts because their exaet location ean be deter mined alter all interferences between the various trades” work ave been coordinated. There are soveral variations of powder-actuated fas- {eners. which are installed with powder-acmated tools and booster cartridges. Gas driven fasteners are also used tor upper attachments. Powder-actuated or gas Usiven fasteners should be used within the manufaetur- e's published application limits. Load eapacities are based on tests in representative base materials in cordance with ASTM E1190, RR HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metal and Flexible » Third E NGERS AND SUPPORTS 5.2.3 Structural Steel Fasteners Several types of beam clamps are available, Some should be used with a retaining clip, Powder-actuated ‘and gas driven fasteners or threaded studs may also be used on steel. Welded studs may be installed using spe- cial welding equipment. Certain manufietured de- vices that are driven onto the flange will support either a rod or a band type hanger 624 Cellular Metal Deck Many office buitdings are now built with a cellu lar steel deck that carries the clecirical and comin nication systems and is covered with concrete fill. The ‘wiring in the cells and the conerete above the deck pre clude the use of fasteners, such as shect met screws, that must pierce the deck, Some manufactur- 18 of this type of deck now offer an integral hanging system. In eases where there ate no integral hangers at the required hanging points, install the rod or strap hhangers before concrete placement, or install welded studs after concrete placement, In all cases, the upper altachments to the decking should be in place before the application of fireproofing materials 52.5 Upper Attachment Upper altachment methods shoul be selected with care, A safety factor of 4 or 5 (based on ultimate failure) is practical unless it can be shoven that few un. predictable variables exist and that quality contral is disciplined. 52.6 Hangers Hangers are usually stips of galvanized stect or round steel rod. For hangers made of round steet rod, luse uncoated hot-rolled steel except where the instal- lation is in a corrosive atmosphere, Where corrosion is 4 problem, hanger rods should be electro-galvanized, allthread ‘rots or hot-dipped galvanized rods their threads painted after installation, 5.2.7 Lower Attachment The lower allichment is the conncetion by the hanger anc the duct section, Fasteners th twate the duct may be sheet metal screws, blind rivets, or selftapping metal screws. 5.2.0 Hanger Spacing A straigit duct seetion is actually 9 box seetion ‘beam of considerable stcength. As in many structures, the joint is the weakest point, so that is where the sup- SA portis, Duct joints, however, are normally strong, enough to permit maximum Hanger spacing at 8 ft (2.44 m) of 10 R (3.05 m) intervals, even with one oF two intermediate joins. Very wide duets require closer hanger spacing, in order to limit individual hanger Toads 10 safe values. They also requite intermediave Thangers to prevent the upper portion of the duct from sagging, 629 ‘Trapeze Selection “Trapeze members must be selected with careful atten- tion to the position of the loads on the horizontal bat, Load analysis is discussed in the notes of Figure: 5.6, 5.2.10 Alger Supports Rectangular risers should be supported by angle or channels secured to thesides of the duct with svelds, bolts, sheet metal serews, or blind rivets, Here rpain, for ducts over 30 in. (762 mm) wide, caution must be used in fastening the support to the sheet be- ‘cause the expansion of the sheet dve fo internal pres- sures will tend to tene the fasteners out. Riser support jntervals should be at one oF two story intervals, i, 12 £1 (3,66 m) to 24 1 (7.32 m), as suitable for toad ing, Another method is (0 support the riser by its rein- forcing. The load can be transferred tothe riser support by angles or by rods. 6.2.11 Hanging System Selection The selection of a hanging system should not be tak~ cn lightly not only because it involves a significant 52 HAG Duct Construction Standards Metal and Flexible » Third Esitlon oy portion of the erection labor, but also because ‘quate hanging system can be disastrous. In any toulti- ple hanger system, the failure of one hanger transfers its load to adjacent hangers. [f one of these fails, an coven greater load is transferred to the next, The result is a cascading failure iN which an entire run of det might fal ‘There are many banger alternatives, especially in the upper attachments. Besides structural adequacy, the eontractor’s choice of hanging system must also take into account the particulars ofthe building sruc- tare, the skills ofthe workmen, the availability of fool ing. and the recommendations of the fistener manufacturer, Because of these variables, i is g- gested thal the hanging system be the contractor's choice, subject tothe approval of tke mechanical etigi- reer. Pigures in this manual show typical hanger construc tions. When special conditions require high safety fae~ tors of the ability (© withstand vibrations, individ al concrete or steel attachments ean be specified to be capable of supporting test loads equal to the min rum rating listed when they are tested in accordance swith methods described by Underwriters” Laborato: ries, Ine., for Pipe Hanger Equipment, Bulletin UL 203, latest edition, see Figures 3-10 and 3-1 for sup- port of flexible duct, "The supports discussed here are not seismically quali- fied, Refer to SMACNA’s Seismic Restraint Mant al for additional reinforcement required by earh- ‘quake hazards. oy HVAC Duct Construct ALPHABET LETTER ONLY INDICATES AN ALTERNATIVE LOCATION OR SITUATION THAT MAY BE PERMITTED OR RESTRICTED BY DESIGN DOCUMENTS.
