Creating Dot Plots

Dot Plots - A dot chart or dot plot is a statistical chart consisting of data points
plotted on a fairly simple scale, typically using filled in circles. There are two
common, yet very different, versions of the dot chart.

Notes:
When creating a dot plot, you only need to create the graph with the numbers
that are in the data set. For example, in the example below, it is not necessary
to put 7 on the graph, because there is no data point with 7 for this question.

Example of a Dot Plot

Before moving on to the example, and practice problems, please make sure to
watch the video below, and look at the example.

Example:
Students in a 6th grade class were asked how many hours they slept the night
before. Below are the number of hours each student slept.
5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11, 12

The Dot Plot for the data points above is shown below.
Create a dot plot for each data set.

1. The following are the amount of pets each student has in their
household.

0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6,

2. Matthew is having a BBQ. He asked each person how many hamburgers

and hot dogs they each wanted. Below are the amount of hamburgers
and hot dogs each person wanted.

1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5

3. Ally ran a 100m race 9 times. Below are the times she ran for each race
in seconds.

12, 12, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 14, 15
