Perform a scoping literature review to ensure novelty

ü Develop a search strategy
ü Search relevant electronic databases and websites, e.g.
MEDLINE, PUBMED, Embase, Cochrane Library etc.
ü Search for relevant systematic reviews, if any

Refine your research question and consider the funding stream

ü Identify experts in field and discuss your idea with them

Decide on the appropriate research study design

ü Decide on the appropriate study design and statistical
analysis
ü Consider feasibility and ethical aspects
ü Think about the sampling and recruitment
ü Form a team with the relevant expertise
ü Identify the additional input you may need from a
statistician, health economist, methodology expert etc.

Write the research proposal (protocol)

ü Follow the protocol guidelines (issued by CRC) carefully
Confirm the costing of the project and apply for grant (if
applicable)

Submit research application to National Medical Research Registry

(Malaysia)

Obtain ethical approval from relevant ethical committee e.g.
Medical Research and Ethics Committee (MREC) for research
involving Ministry of Health personnel / patients / facilities

Prepare for data management before collecting and collating the
data
ü Design data collection forms / questionnaire and

develop a database

ü Follow the protocol and guidelines
ü Think about the data protection and confidentiality

Analyse the data and interpret findings

ü Perform data analysis
ü Interpret findings
ü Compare your findings with the relevant published
evidence

ü Clarify how your research findings can be put into

clinical practice

Reporting and dissemination

ü Write a research report
ü Follow relevant reporting guidelines
ü Present at conferences or seminars
ü Write a scientific paper for a peer-reviewed journal
