Stem Cells: Types and Applications

Embryonic stem cells come from embryos and are totipotent or pluripotent, making them flexible but also tumorigenic and requiring destruction of the embryo. Adult stem cells are found in adult tissue and are mostly multipotent, making them less flexible but also non-tumorigenic and raising fewer ethical issues. Stem cells can be used for regenerative medicine by replacing damaged cells and tissues, gene therapy by inserting genes to treat diseases, and therapeutic cloning to produce patient-matched cells.

GENE THERAPY

• Gene therapy is insertion of genes into an individual’s cells and tissue to treat a
disease
• Mostly is being used to treat cancer, infectious diseases, heart diseases, arthritis,
Alzheimer's disease etc.
