Abstract

2
Transmission of data is one of the most important day to day activities in the fast growing
world. Using wireless network in crowded areas is quite frustrating as many devices access the
same internet host with a maximum speed of 150Mps. The demand for wireless data is
increasing exponentially but the capacity is drying up. The frequency range which is currently
used for wireless communication which is the radio frequency range has many complications
such as interferences continuing to grow, bandwidth limit, reliability and power availability
limit.

Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) is a latest technology that makes use of LED light which helps in the
transmission of data much faster and flexible than data that can be transmitted through Wi-Fi.
Light reaches nearly everywhere so communication can also go along with light easily. Light
Fidelity is a branch of optical wireless communication which is an emerging technology. It is a
part of Visible Light Communication (VLC) which works by switching light bulbs on and off
within nanoseconds which is too small to be noticed by a human eye.

Introduction
3
Li-Fi stands for Light Fidelity. The technology is a major breakthrough technology for the
mobile internet community and for the connected objects domain and was proposed by the
German physicist Harald Haas in 2011 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Global Talk
on Visible Light Communication (VLC). Li-Fi is a wireless optical networking technology that
uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) for transmission of data. The term Li-Fi refers to visible light
communication (VLC) technology that uses light as medium to deliver high-speed
communication in a manner similar to Wi-Fi and complies with the IEEE standard. It is a high
speed, bidirectional and fully networked subsets of VLC.

In contrast to using radio waves, Li-Fi makes use of visible light. This allows Li-Fi to have
access to a greater range of available frequencies as the visible light spectrum, which is 10,000
times larger than the entire radio spectrum. The visible light spectrum covers wavelength range
of 380-700 nanometer and colors from near ultraviolet to near infrared. Information may be
obtained within vicinity of visible light by means of electronic gadgets with photodiode. This
means that light bulbs can bring not only light but wireless communication at the same time
anywhere where LEDs are used. Wi-Fi plays an efficient role in wireless data coverage within
buildings, while using Li-Fi we will provide excellent density data coverage in particular
location without any radio interference issues. Li-Fi provides better latency, performance,
accessibility, and security than currently used communication which is Wi-Fi and a speed of
1Gps has been achieved under laboratory conditions. This inturn has enhanced capability to
enhance internet of things (iot), cloud computing and 5th generation cellular system.

It is possible to encode data in the light by varying the rate at which the LEDs flicker on and
off to give different strings of 1s and 0s. Direct line of sight isn’t necessary forLi-Fi to transmit
signal and light reflected off of the walls can achieve 70mbps. The light waves cannot penetrate
walls which makes a much shorter range, though more secure from hacking, relative to Wi-Fi.

5
Motivation

In the era of overcrowded (data communication) world, Li-Fi is a new way of wireless
communication that uses LED lights to transmit data wirelessly. In the electronics and
communication technology industry the concepts of Internet of Things (IOT), artificial
intelligence and cloud computing have a great role. These areas of interest require
communication system with a stable, secure and high data transfer rate. Currently, the widely
used system uses radio waves which compromise just a small part of the electromagnetic
spectrum. Li-Fi has got a much boarder spectrum for transmission, the part which has not
been greatly utilized yet. Li-Fi can provide the features we aspired and we lacked in the
current system.

Literature Review

A. V. Manikanta , Ankith I. , A Review on Li-Fi: The Next Generation Wi-Fi,

International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering
Technology(IJRASET),2021
This paper has attempted to clarify the concept and applications of Li-Fi. The
comparison between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi given pros and cons of both systems is also
stated. Although there’s still a long way to go to make this technology a commercial
success, the authors have worked on the system architecture which promises to solve
the problem of limit on the radio spectrum, space and low internet connection speed.

B. Paul Tota, Mircea-F Vaida et.al, Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) communication applied to
telepresence robotics, 21th International Carathian Control Conference (ICCC), 2020
This paper has demonstrated how LiFi can be used in telepresence robotics for remote
control of the robot and for real-time data exchange. In the Li-Fi system, the data can
be transmitted via visible light communication system with speed up to 100 times
faster than Wi-Fi. This can be advantage for robots that have direct visual field for a
short period of time. This paper has tested the possibility of using the Li-Fi
technology on teleprescence robots. An experimental prototype was developed to test
the functionality as well.

C. Rosilah Hassan, Mamoon Salam Flayyih, Ahmed Mahdl, Arbaiah Inn, et.al, Visible
light communication Technology for data transmission using LiFi, 2nd international
Conference on Computer and Information Science, 2020
This paper has successfully investigated the performance of data communication
using VLC. This research is based on an implementation for different types of data
transmission through LiFi. The methodology that has been adopted for this study
consists on a simulation topology that has been built to study the performance
protocols in LiFi environment for VLC. Various types of data have been transmitted
through an appropriate designed model in the paper.

Conclusion

Li-Fi provides promising features to improve the data communication. With the development
of this technology, it can be put into practical use. Every bulb can be used as a hotspot bulb
to transmit wireless data and will proceed to cleaner, greener, cheaper and safer future to the
coming new generation. It is a very attracting and efficient technology as with the increase in
the number of device connected. The increasing demand for higher bandwidths, faster and
more secure data transmission as well as environmental and undoubtedly human friendly
technology heralds the start of a major shift in wireless technology, a shift from RF to optical
technologies.

LiFi is the upcoming and growing technology acting as a catalyst for various other
developing and new inventions as well. Therefore, there is a certainty of development of
future applications of the LiFi which can be extended to different platforms and various
aspect of human life.
