Complete Apartment Inspection Checklist

Exterior: Cleanliness:
Doors are undamaged Check bathrooms and kitchen for mold

Doors can open and close with ease Look for cracks in walls or ceiling

Windows are not cracked or torn Check ceiling for water damage

Windows open and close with ease Check for weird smells

Locks all function and have proper keys Look for evidence of mice or bugs, but
understand that if you’re occupying a long-vacant
Locks are present on all windows and doors unit, a few bugs here and there are expected

Interior: Common areas:


Check all outlets Check the building laundry room for defunct
machines
Run all faucets
If assigned a parking space, make sure you
Flush all toilets
can access it and the pavement is in good
Turn all appliances on and off shape

Make sure fridge is cold Examine the sidewalk for cracks

Run A/C and heat Make sure you can access your mailbox and
that your key works in your assigned box
Check filters on the HVAC unit(s)
If your apartment requires entering through
Check blinds for damage a shared front door, make sure your key, fob,
or keycard works for that door.
Check floors for scratches and carpet for
tears or bald spots

Test washer and dryer

Safety + security:
Test the smoke detectors

Test the carbon monoxide detector

Make sure the security system is operational
