SECOND CO VIRTUAL DEMONSTRATION TEACHING
IV- MARCOS (8:00-8:50)
Learning Competency:
Compare and contrast the characteristics of different types of soil. S4ES-IVA-1
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils are expected to:
1. Compare and contrast the characteristics of different types of soil.
2. Write the characteristics of different types of soil.
3. Recognize the importance of soil in our daily lives.
II. Subject Matter:
A. Topic: Types of Soil and Characteristics
B. Science Concepts/Ideas:
Soil is a very important natural resource on earth which is made up of tiny
particles of rocks and decayed plants and animals. Plants, animals, houses and
other organisms are found on the soil. We live on the soil and it help us in many
ways. Different types of soil differ in color, texture, odor and its ability to hold
water.
C. Science Processes:
Observing, Identifying, Comparing, Contrasting, Describing, Communicating,
Applying
D. Materials:
Power Point Presentation, Google Meet

B. ENGAGE (5 minutes)
Watching and listening to a video song entitled, “Grow, Grow, Grow a Garden.”
Question:
1. What are the basic needs of plants in order to grow?
C. EXPLORE (10 minutes)
1. Introduce Lesson: Types of Soil and Characteristics
2. Ask: What covers the surface of the ground and what it contains? Do all soils have
similar characteristics?
3. Lead the class in discussing the Science concepts.

D. EXPLAIN (10 minutes)
Lead the class in explaining the basic types of soil and its characteristics.
Soil is a small particles of rocks that contain decayed tiny organisms and plants.
Soil differs in their physical characteristics. They differ in color, texture, odor and water
holding capacity. Soil comes from different places and they contain different particles. The
three different types of soil are loam, clay and sand.

Types of Soil Common Characteristics
1. Clay Particles are packed together tightly. It is
sticky when wet and has the finest texture.
2. Sand Particles are coarse and loose.
3. Loam It is a mixture of sand and clay. It contains
large amount of decaying plants and
animals.
E. ELABORATE (10 minutes)
APPLICATION
ACTIVITY 1-Let’s Observe
DIRECTIONS: Study the diagrams below and answer the questions.
Situation: Suppose 500 mL water was poured into each container of soil in the same
amount at the same time. Observe how much water will be drained in the following setup
after three minutes.
SAND LOAM CLAY

Based on the set-up, fill in the table below:
Types of Soil Amount of water drained (mL) Size of Particles
Sand
Loam
Clay
Questions:
1. Which soil has the highest amount of water drained?
2. Which soil has the lowest amount of water drained?
3. What characteristic affects the ability of soil to drain water?
ACTIVITY 2- Let’s Analyze

DIRECTIONS: Identify whether the characteristics describe loam, sand or clay soil. Check ( ) the
appropriate boxes.
Characteristics of the Soil LOAM SAND CLAY
1. It contains minerals from dead plants and decayed
inorganic matter.
2. It has the smallest particles among all the soil types.
3. It has the biggest particles among all the soil types.
4. It is considered to be the perfect soil for plants.
5. 7. It drains water quickly.
GENERALIZATION
DIRECTIONS: Express your understanding of the lesson by supplying the blanks with a word to
complete the paragraph. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.
sticky loam planting clay sand
I learned that the three different types of soil are sand, (1)_____________, and clay. Loam is
best for (2)_________. Clay has the finest texture and it feels (3)_____ when wet. (4)______ is used as
growing medium for cactus plants. (5)_______ has the smallest particles among all the soil types.
VALUES INTEGRATION
Is soil plays a great role in our life? Why soil is important?
F. EVALUATE (10 minutes)
DIRECTIONS: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not. ( Using Quizziz Online
Application)
__________1. Sand feels grainy and is made up of big particles.
__________2. Soil that has bigger particles than sand is clay.
__________3. Clay soil is sticky when wet.
__________4. Loam is a mixture of clay and sand.
__________5. Sand has a fine texture.
