The Poison Garden
The Alnwick Garden is one of North England’s most beautiful tourist attractions. Acres of colourful
plants invite visitors to wander through rows of fragrant flowers, water sculptures and beautiful
fountains. The garden has one of the largest trechouses in the world, built at 18 metres above the
‘ground. ;
However, within the Alnwick Garden, there is another 14-acre garden hidden behind black
iron gates. This is a place where visitors are told not to smell the flowers. Known as the Poison
Garden, this place was opened in 2005. In this garden, the plants are so dangerous and toxic that
some of them are kept in large cages. This part of the garden is a huge contrast to the bright green
scenery that greets you everywhere else.
At first glance, it looks like the usual English country garden, with lush trees and lovely fragrant
blooms. However, when we look closer, nothing here is what it seems. On the gate leading to this
green garden is message. It is a warning of what is inside: “These Plants Can Kill!”
Who is behind this unique creation? It is the brainchild of Jane Percy, an English duchess.
Jane's husband had inherited a castle. As she explored the gardens around the castle, Jane found
an overgrown garden. She had an idea to build a new garden filled with plants that could Kill
She then set about collecting poisonous plants. Jane wanted to educate people on the dangers of
Certain plants. Many visitors are usually surprised to learn that some common plants can be highly
toxic. Visitors can see more than 100 different species of deadly plants from all over the world.
They can also learn about the science and history behind them. Due to the plants’ dangerous
ualities, visitors are prohibited from smelling, touching or tasting any of them. Even with guidelines
in place, a visitor can fall victim to the plants.
It is sad that in reality, not many people know much about poisonous plants. Many are not even
able to recognise such plants. This is scary since they will most likely not seek medical attention
Until itis too late. A garden such as this is indeed useful although it may seem a litle strange.
