Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was one of South Africa's greatest heroes in the fight against racial discrimination. He was imprisoned and tortured but still led the country to its first democratic election. Mandela initially only sought personal freedom as a child, but joined the African National Congress and fought for his people's freedom, transforming from a frightened lawyer into a bold criminal. He was grateful for the sacrifices of thousands of black heroes and realized that true freedom was indivisible, and that he could not be free while his people remained in chains. Mandela had a vision for comprehensive freedom and humanity, believing that both the oppressor and oppressed should be liberated from hatred of each other.

Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest of all black heroes who waged a relentless fight
against racial discrimination in South Africa. He was tortured in prison; despite his suffering,
he led the country to elect its first government in a democratic manner. . Nelson Mandela
was not born with a hunger to be free. Later, he realized that his freedom as a child was an
illusion. He also realized that freedom in his youth was ‘transitory’ as in limited to his
personal freedom.
Only when he joined the African National Congress, his hunger grew for the freedom
of his people. Only then, a frightened young lawyer transformed into a bold `criminal’. A
family-loving husband was forced to lead the life of a monk in secrecy. Nelson Mandela is
grateful for the unimaginable sacrifices made by thousands of black heroes for the freedom
of their people. He realized that freedom is indivisible and the fact that he could not lead a
free and honourable life if his people were in chains.
Nelson Mandela had a wider vision for humanity. For him, freedom was
comprehensive and couldn’t be divided. He believed that both the oppressor and the
oppressed should be liberated of their hatred toward each other. Both alike are robbed of
their humanity.
