Use Equations (6) and (7) to calculate the sum of force components °F; and Y°F,. Use the average
value of @ and g = 9.804 + 0.001 m/s’. Record the steps of your calculation. Use SI units.

Ideally, 2 F, and YF, should each be equal to zero. However, due to experimental uncertainties,
your ) F; and JF, values may not be zero. Our experience shows that the absolute uncertainties in
the net force components)" F; and Y: Fy are usually less than + 0.1 N. If your experimental values
YFrand YF, are less than + 0.1 N, then you can conclude that they are negligible and hence equal
to zero within the experimental uncertainties. Can you conclude from your results that the plastic
ring is in translational equilibrium? Explain.
Question: Can an object be in translational equilibrium if there are only two forces acting on it?
Use sketches to explain your answer. You may use the equipment to test your answer.Equilibrium - 11

Calculate the magnitude of the torque about the balance point for each of the three weights and
record in Table 5.
Sample calculation for Data set #1: Perform a sample calculation below. Use the correct ST units
in every step. Assign signs to the torques depending on whether they act in a clockwise or in a
counterclockwise direction. Use g = 9.804 + 0.001 m/s?.

‘Af the meter ruler is in rotational equilibrium, then Tyer (last column) should be equal to zero within
the experimental uncertainties.
Select one data set from Table 5 for your uncertainty calculations. Calculate the absolute uncer-
tainty 5¢,, 5%, and 5t; from t = migd), %] = mogdz, and t = msgds using the uncertainty
propagation rule for products.
Calculate 5tyep = t + T + 1 based on the uncertainties 5t1, 51, and 53 calculated above.
Record the value of Tyer with its uncertainly 5 tye.

Based on the overlap test (Notes to Students, Section 4.1), does tyer = 0 within the experimental
uncertainties?
Post-lab questiorEquilibrium - 14
Answer the following question without the help from your demonstrator. You may discuss with
your lab partner.
Question: Why are door handles placed as far as possible from the door hinges? (Consider that
the torque needed to open the door is constant, Think about variables in the equation for 1.)Equilibrium - 15
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS
(What can you conclude from your results in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2? Did you get the
expected results? If not, why? Analyse your results to draw conclusions.)
